Key Responsibilities

* Provide specialised nursing care in the Dermatology Outpatient setting, including information, advice, assessment, interventions and follow‑up for all patients.
* Support patients with additional needs such as cognitive or behavioural difficulties.
* Communicate and liaise across multidisciplinary teams to ensure seamless care.
* Assist and support senior nursing staff while monitoring and improving the effectiveness of dermatology services.
* Lead independent nurse‑led clinics, including phototherapy (UVA/UVB), patch testing, photodynamic therapy (PDT), treatment counselling and eczema/psoriasis education.
* Maintain expert and professional nursing care in line with research‑based protocols and NMC guidelines, and complete accurate written nursing records.
* Develop and manage nurse‑led services, undertaking holistic needs assessments, treatment and follow‑up of patients.
* Provide support to patients undergoing treatments and deputise for senior staff, including cover for the Cancer MDT.
* Make clinical decisions for a defined patient group, exercising sound judgement.
* Manage medicines, including PGD, and administer photosensitising creams and local anaesthetic for PDT patients.
* Deliver pre‑treatment counselling and holistic needs assessments.
* Assist in the minor operations theatre as scrub nurse alongside clinicians.
* Participate in clinical governance and audit activities to improve nurse‑led services.
* Act in accordance with the NMC Code of Conduct and professional protocols.
* Develop competencies for junior staff and lower band nurses, including training, rostering and appraisal.
* Adapt to changing service needs, expanding nurse‑led clinics to include patient education, minor dressing protocol, wound care, diagnostic dermoscopy, cryotherapy and simple punch biopsies.
* Oversee clinical supervision of junior staff and mentoring of students.
* Assess, plan, implement and evaluate patients’ clinical care and deliver specialist advice.
* Show initiative for change management, service improvement and development.
* Participate actively in quality improvement projects using clinical governance and audit.
* Act as a clinical and professional role model and mentor for learners and other staff.
* Prioritise and manage workload effectively, including delegation to support clinic operations.
* Communicate and negotiate effectively, handling difficult situations and non‑compliant patients.
* Provide leadership, demonstrating an ability to lead a team and organise workload.
* Maintain ongoing professional development, attend training, keep NMC revalidation current and promote Trust values.
* Possess basic knowledge of budgetary management, identify cost‑saving options and monitor implementation.
* Use electronic computer systems such as EOL, ESR, Medway, SBS and NHSP.
* Assess and develop action plans for staff personal and professional development.
* Participate in orientation of newly appointed nursing staff and conduct individual performance appraisals.
* Encourage and motivate staff at all levels and monitor staff performance, off‑duty, annual leave and sickness.
* Provide support and counselling for staff grades below band 5 and oversee their development needs.
* Resolve problems (e.g., Datix issues, patient complaints) and manage HR policies relating to absence and holidays.
* Undertake specialist education and training to promote new ways of working.
* Support, initiate and promote evidence‑based practice, contribute to guidelines, protocols and ensure adherence to professional regulation.
* Identify and conduct research and clinical audit to inform practice and improve patient care.
* Ensure delivery of agreed standards of patient care, monitored by audit, and promote awareness of current nursing research.
* Use data to contribute to improving patient care.
* Maintain effective use of resources, including stock management and equipment maintenance.
* Own continuing professional development and identify personal learning needs.
* Identify self‑development areas, training requirements and maintain a professional portfolio and reflective diary.
