We are committed to an inclusive workforce that reflects the communities we serve. We welcome flexible working patterns for all vacancies, including job share. Please clearly include any information regarding your preferred working arrangements on your application.

This role will be based in the Combined Packaging Regime team within Waste Markets & Shipments (WM&S), part of Environmental Markets and Enforcement. We are a national team with officers based across England, ensuring a consistent regulatory approach across the country. We ensure that companies dispose of their waste correctly by enforcing government regulations – “right waste, right place”.

You will be key to planning, monitoring and delivering compliance and enforcement activity within your area of waste regulation, to drive a circular economy.

Responsibilities

* Develop further relationships with customers and stakeholders.
* Answer technical queries; interpret and diagnose problems and develop solutions.
* Collate, analyse and use complex data to help make evidence-based decisions on regulation compliance.
* Deal with confidential and sensitive information whilst keeping in line with data protection guidelines.
* Contribute to the development and improvement of processes, procedures, and operational instructions.
* Undertake audit and enforcement work both in the field and/or desk-based.
* Work with businesses to bring them into compliance and investigate companies suspected of non-compliance. This may involve conducting interviews under caution and compiling case files for our legal teams.

Responding to incidents is a central part of the role. You may have an incident role and be required to respond or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract additional payment; full training and alternative working arrangements will be provided to support your incident role.

Team and work style

WM&S is a supportive and inclusive department focused on health, safety, wellbeing, and development. Our aim is to improve recycling quality and ensure waste entering and leaving the country is handled appropriately for recycling and recovery. We regulate industry, ensure compliance, and help eliminate illegal activities. The work is both field and desk based within a defined geographical area.

Experience and Skills

* Ability to handle difficult or confrontational conversations.
* Based in the South East packaging producer team with an expectation to travel.
* Excellent influencing skills and success in developing good relations in complex environments.
* Experience of producing accurate reports; collation, analysis and interpretation of data using Microsoft Office.
* Ability to manage multiple demands on time in a prioritised manner to achieve outcomes and deliver against plans.
* Knowledge of compliance and enforcement legislation is desirable but not essential, as full training will be given.
* Must have a valid full UK driving license.

Everyone starting in a new role with the Environment Agency will be welcomed into the team and given training and support to succeed.

Additional Information

Benefits include a competitive salary, flexible working, and a starting annual leave allowance of 25 days plus bank holidays (pro rata). Interviews are expected to take place in person from mid-October. We operate a hybrid working approach (office and home working) with regular travel within your base area (South East) and travel for training and meetings.

The Environment Agency may use outcomes from this recruitment for future vacancies within the next 6 months. For an informal discussion, please contact jessica.crumpton-banks@environment-agency.gov.uk.
