The Role
As a Senior Systems Engineer on a critical national infrastructure programme you will have a full understanding of systems engineering principles and prior experience in a similar role integrating deliveries from suppliers. You will work with customers and suppliers to execute Systems Engineering activities across the full lifecycle, including focus on Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and architecture frameworks such as DoDAF, MODAF, and TOGAF. You will design, implement, and maintain complex systems that align with business objectives while adhering to industry‑standard architecture frameworks.
Key Responsibilities
* Work with stakeholders, suppliers and architects to refine system and sub‑system requirements and acceptance criteria.
* Model functional and non‑functional requirements and scenarios using MBSE and architectural framework approaches.
* Model operational, business and system designs and behaviours within architectural views.
* Define and develop requirements, turning them into feasible solutions by proposing architecture, system and component definitions.
* Develop component and system specifications and compliance criteria for system items, hardware and software.
* Ensure systems, items and components meet industry security and safety standards.
* Manage requirements at all levels from system down to hardware and software.
* Define validation plans and ensure compliance through analysis, simulation and/or test (e.g. DO160).
* Maintain interface control documents and application programming interfaces.
* Allocate requirements to lower‑level components, conducting technical derivation analysis as needed.
* Manage compliance assessments at system and lower levels.
* Maintain high‑level designs and oversee development of lower‑level designs.
* Produce detailed engineering artefacts such as high‑level and low‑level designs, compliance reports, and milestone technical reviews.
* Engage technically with the supply chain and coordinate with systems architects and simulation engineers.
* Anticipate and manage technical and business issues, arbitrate between solutions considering sustainability, reusability, optimisation, schedule, quality, cost, risks, safety and performance.
* Generate technical reports and presentations.
* Develop specification documents and procedures before launch into manufacturing.
* Ensure production, compliance and testing of components, items and systems.
* Develop validation test methods and protocols using aerospace best practices.
* Participate in in‑depth analysis of test data.
* Ensure configuration management is in place from requirement through to operation.
* Provide technical feedback on design and development of mechanical and electrical sub‑systems.
* Facilitate technical review sessions and deliver project health status updates.
* Engage with clients, suppliers, and regulatory bodies to formulate engineering solutions.
* Identify technical risks and devise mitigation strategies.
* Manage the technical backlog and content of associated releases.
Qualifications
* Extensive experience in defence, security or other safety and security critical information systems sectors.
* Strong experience with systems modelling and MBSE tools (e.g. NoMagic Cameo), architectural frameworks (e.g. TOGAF) and languages (e.g. SysML).
* Strong knowledge of requirements and user scenario development in both text‑based and model‑based approaches.
* Success working within mission‑critical systems integration programmes.
* Ability to work with multiple stakeholders and suppliers across organisational boundaries.
* Experience developing system behaviour diagrams, modelling interfaces and encapsulating functional & non‑functional requirements.
* Demonstrable successes within the Systems Engineering environment.
* Excellent customer‑facing skills – ability to ingest large volumes of requirements and develop clear customer understanding.
* Experience designing and delivering systems in a public cloud environment.
Desired Attributes
* Positive mindset.
