We are looking for an energetic enthusiastic and inspiring classroom practitioner with a real passion for Geography. We offer an exciting opportunity to join a supportive and motivated team and you must possess the skills and determination to make a significant difference to the lives of our students and share our single goal of students first. The department is extremely well resourced. Every classroom has a visualiser and these are used extensively by the team in frequent and highly effective episodes of guided practice to develop strong procedural knowledge and confidence for independent and deliberate practice.
The department is heavily invested in developing strong disciplinary knowledge at KS3 and KS4. We have multiple thriving humanities clubs that aim to foster a passion for Geography in the real world and equip students with the confidence and skills to be successful. At KS3 we study a 3 year curriculum we cover a wide range of exciting and engaging global topics including; What makes our world fantastic Is Africa a truly challenging continent and local topics such as Should the Barnsley council build MU2 and MU3 Fieldwork is extremely important to our department we are in the process of introducing a range of new fieldwork opportunities and local studies into our curriculum. At GCSE we follow AQA. The units we cover are Paper 1: Natural Hazards Living World (Hot Deserts) Coasts and Rivers; Paper 2: Urban Economic Change; Resource Management and Water; Paper 3: PreRelease and Fieldwork.
We share a strong wholeschool literacy strategy that aims to ensure that all students can gain the educational and personal benefits of reading and subjectspecific tier 3 vocabulary. The department is passionate about speaking and writing like geographers. Furthermore there is a comprehensive oracy strategy that is fully embedded within the department and across the academy. This is supporting writing confidence and competence as well as arming students with exceptional speaking and listening skills.
Outwood Academy Carlton is an Ofsted Good rated 11 16 academy based in the friendly attractive village of Carlton in Barnsley South Yorkshire. The Academy became part of the Outwood Family of Schools in 2016.
In October 2024 Ofsted noted that students are taught to be good human beings as part of the ethos at Outwood Academy Carlton and that they have a strong moral code and behave well in and outside of lessons including contributing to the wider community. Ofsted also noted that leaders are determined that all students should succeed and be well prepared for life through a curriculum that develops their knowledge skills and character. Furthermore Ofsted acknowledges that students who regularly attend school make strong progress as a result of the schools rapid improvement.
We believe that learning should be both enjoyable and enriching. We are innovators with a knowledgerich curriculum designed to personalise learning for every student helping them to reach their potential. We have won numerous awards as a school and we have been accredited with the prestigious IQM Award in addition to being an IQM Centre of Excellence which highlights that inclusion at all levels is of paramount importance to us. We are also delighted to have been awarded the United Against Bullying Bronze Award from the AntiBullying Alliance of the National Childrens Bureau which demonstrates our commitment to stopping bullying and improving the wellbeing of our students. We are also very proud to have been awarded Bronze Status by the Carnegie Centre of Excellence for Mental Health Award.
We work hard to ensure we reduce workload on staff allowing more time in the classroom to put our vision of students first raising standards and transforming lives into practice.
Outwood Academy Carlton is situated in North East Barnsley and is easily accessible from South and West Yorkshire with Wakefield Sheffield Doncaster Huddersfield and Pontefract all within commuting distance. We are just 5 miles from the M1.
