Applications are invited for a Consultant in Acute Medicine at West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust, based within the Acute Medical Unit (AMU). This is a permanent contract.
About the AMU
The AMU is a busy, varied, fast-paced, and friendly environment supported by a multidisciplinary team including specialist registrars, advanced clinical practitioners, physician associates, and nursing staff. The role involves providing comprehensive assessments of patients in various settings within the AMU, including the acute assessment unit, short stay ward, and Same Day Emergency Care.
Main duties of the job
1. Join existing consultants to provide timely assessment of patients in the AMU.
2. Conduct ward rounds, review patients in the assessment unit, and participate in Same Day Emergency Care.
3. Participate in teaching and training of junior staff, medical students, and advanced nurse/clinical practitioners.
4. Engage in departmental and trust clinical governance and audit activities.
5. Possibility to provide specialist activity up to 3 sessions per week if applicable.

The unit collaborates closely with community services to improve patient pathways and reduce unnecessary admissions.
Person Specification
Qualifications and Specialist Training
* Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in General (Internal) or Acute Medicine, or eligibility within six months of completing training.
* MRCP or equivalent.
* Full GMC registration with a license to practice.
* MD or PhD.
Experience and Clinical Expertise
* Completion of supervised training or equivalent to UK CCT.
* Expert clinical opinion in adult general/emergency medicine.
* Ability to manage full clinical responsibility independently.
Management and Audit Experience
* Ability to advise on service efficiency and management.
* Leadership skills for multidisciplinary teams.
* Experience in clinical governance and audit.
* Ability to work within NHS performance frameworks.
Teaching and Research Experience
* Supervision of junior doctors and trainees.
* Experience in workplace assessments and teaching.
* Research experience and publications are desirable.
Other Attributes
* Flexible team player with good interpersonal skills.
* Reflective, caring, and effective communicator.
* Commitment to continuous medical education and governance.
* Demonstrable English communication skills, evidenced by PLAB or equivalent.
* Ability to travel to rural locations.

This post is subject to a Disclosure and Barring Service check. The salary range is £105,504 to £139,882 per annum, pro-rata.
