Band 6 Neuro-Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist

We are looking for a dynamic flexible individual who would like the opportunity to expand their knowledge and skills within the speciality of neuro oncology. You will need to have excellent communication skills and some experience within the field of Neurosurgery, Neurology and/or Oncology to join the Southwest Neuro Oncology Specialist Nurse Team.

This is an exciting opportunity for a proactive, self-directed individual to develop their knowledge and skills in managing and caring for the complex and diverse needs of the Neuro Oncology patient, providing advice and coordinated support to patients with a diagnosis of a central nervous system tumour. This is a diverse role and involves different ways of working but offers many transferable skills that can be utilised in all aspects of nursing care.


Main duties of the job

As a team we care for the needs of patients across the Peninsula diagnosed with a brain or spinal tumour requiring surgery and/or oncological treatments or ongoing surveillance. You will be working within a multidisciplinary team necessitating a high level of communication with Neurosurgical/Oncology, medical and nursing staff alongside allied health professionals, Community Services and Charities.

The successful applicant will be responsible for managing a caseload of patients with the support of the team. We are looking for an experienced Nurse who is committed to delivering high standards of holistic care to all patients.

Job responsibilities

Clinical

Manages his/her own caseload of patients whilst working as part of the Multidisciplinary team

Communicates highly sensitive and emotive condition related information to patients, relatives, e.g. terminal illness, bereavement

Assess new patients in the clinical area a) identifying their psychological, physiological, emotional spiritual and cultural needs in relation to their disease and proposed treatment, providing a pathway of nursing care for the patient

Act as patient advocate when relevant and be able to educate on all the treatment options to enable a patient to make an informed choice, negotiating with the medical team to agree a pathway of care

Provide continuity of care throughout the patient journey and liaising across specialised areas

Contribute to the development of specialised programmes of care and provide specialised advice, written and oral information to patients, relatives

Provide clinical advice and support to health care professionals within and across organizational boundaries

To formulate individualised patient treatment care programmes in conjunction with the medical/nursing team considering

Each patient is placed in the correct treatment protocol

Investigations and treatments are organized as needed

Act as a role model

To provide support for distressed patients/carers and bereaved relatives and identifying patients at risk and referring to appropriate agencies

Initiates changes in management of care

Participate in case conferences in relation to future management or discharge arrangements

Maintain accurate patient records and ensure all relevant information is documented in medical and nursing notes

In collaboration with multidisciplinary team members assess the needs of patients, families and carers and provide specialist advice

Assist with the development of a specialised nursing service provision

Works across Neuro Oncology sites within the South West Peninsula

***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as Priority and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.***


Person Specification


Knowledge and experience

* Proven evidence of Continuous personal and profession development
* Demonstrable relevant post registration experience, at Band 5 or above in the neuroscience speciality or cancer care
* Proven knowledge in relevant speciality
* Demonstratable experience of audit


Qualifications

* NMC Registered General Nurse
* Advanced Communications


Aptitude and Abilities

* Ability to support and influence change
* IT literate
* Organisation and negotiation skills
* Leadership and motivational skills
