Protecnium is an international consulting firm specialising in engineering and technical services (protecnium.com). We are seeking an Environmental Advisor for a tunnel construction project in South London, 100% on site.
Project: Heavy civils/tunnelling works
Contract length: 6 months (with the intention to redeploy to other projects on completion)
Working hours: Monday–Friday, ~40 hours/week (occasional out-of-hours or weekend work may be required to support possessions/monitoring)
Role purpose: Ensure legal compliance and drive continual improvement of environmental performance on a live tunnel construction site, working closely with Delivery, Quality and Health & Safety (H&S) teams.
Responsibilities
* Develop, implement, and maintain CEMP and SWMP, plus topic plans for noise, vibration, dust, water and biodiversity—built for real-world use in a tunnelling environment.
* Secure and manage permits/consents (e.g., Section 61 under the Control of Pollution Act, discharge/abstraction, Duty of Care/waste carrier), liaising directly with the Environment Agency and Local Authorities.
* Lead site monitoring & inspections: noise, vibration, dust, water quality/controlled discharges; log data, actions and close-outs in SmartWaste (or similar).
* Plan and deliver toolbox talks/training; lead/assist incident and complaint investigations, capture root causes, and implement corrective actions.
* Review RAMS/method statements to embed robust environmental controls; champion carbon, water, and waste reduction measures that work in the field.
* Prepare concise environmental/sustainability reports for senior stakeholders and the client; support audits (internal/external) and ISO 14001 compliance.
* Contribute to CEEQUAL or similar sustainability requirements as needed.
Requirements
* Degree/Master’s in Environmental Science/Management (or Engineering with primary site-based environmental experience).
* 5+ years’ recent UK site experience as Environmental Advisor/Engineer on heavy civils (tunnelling, rail, shafts, deep excavations/cut-and-cover); hands-on field work.
* Proven delivery of ISO 14001, CEMP/SWMP, field monitoring (noise/vibration/dust/water), audits, and action-focused reporting.
* Strong knowledge of UK environmental & H&S legislation; confident liaison with EA/Local Authorities, including Section 61 and related consents.
* CSCS, right to work in the UK, full UK driving licence.
* Proficient with Microsoft Office and environmental trackers/databases (e.g., SmartWaste); organised, proactive, able to work independently on site and meet deadlines.
* IEMA or NEBOSH Environmental; PTS (rail); familiarity with Fieldview/Asite and environmental monitoring equipment (nice to have).
