MERITUS Talent is working with one of Europe's leading weapons systems manufacturers to recruit a Laboratory Technician to join their Materials team. This is a contract role paying £40 per hour inside IR35.
Materials & Process Laboratory Technician - Stevenage - Contract - £40 per hour via umbrella - Fully Onsite - Optional compressed workweek
The Materials team is a federated UK/France-based group within Mechanical Engineering, operating with unified processes and collaborating with other materials teams across the business. They have extensive test facilities and specialized knowledge in materials used throughout the organization.
The group supports all business areas concerning materials and processes, with expertise in metallic, non-metallic, composite, and other materials science fields.
Key activities include:
* Providing technical guidance and approval on material selection, characterization, and application across projects
* Offering materials and process consultancy to the Government and MoD
* Representing the company on international, government, MoD, trade bodies, strategic steering bodies, and standard committees
* Supporting REACH and RoHS compliance
* Leading failure investigations and forensic engineering efforts
* Guiding the use and management of hazardous materials
* Developing solutions for obsolescence issues
* Conducting technical assessments and validation of supplier and subcontractor processes and manufactured parts
* Providing technical support for in-country (offset) design and manufacturing
* Performing quality assessments of purchased items
Responsibilities:
Conduct comprehensive assessments of various materials, including metals, paints, adhesives, composites, and related processes. Familiarity with general laboratory equipment is required; experience with XRF, FTIR, SEM, and EDX is advantageous but not essential. A strong background in materials chemistry is desirable.
Prepare reports, interpret engineering drawings and specifications, and utilize IT systems such as Word, Excel, and Access.
Support all laboratory activities, including failure investigations, materials selection, supply chain support, first article inspection reports, material inspection and characterization, among others.
Assist in generating or assessing compliance data such as REACH, RoHS, and environmental considerations in engineering designs.
Required Skillset/Experience:
* Experience in manufacturing laboratories
* Assessment of materials and components against international standards, including DEF STANs
* Support in the selection, procurement, and manufacturing of engineering parts or components
* Knowledge of non-metallic material production and processing, including paints and adhesives
