We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated registered nurse to join our dynamic and skilled team as Junior Sister / Charge Nurse to support the Senior Nursing Team Manage staff and patients through our busy endoscopy unit at King’s College Hospital Denmark Hill site.
The endoscopy unit is a JAG accredited five-roomed facility with GA and fluoroscopy and provides both a comprehensive diagnostic service as well complex and innovative therapeutic procedures.
Applicants should have endoscopy experience. The ideal candidate will be a professional who will assist the endoscopy senior nursing team to deliver and maintain high standards of care.
Main duties of the job
As a Junior Sister /Charge Nurse in the endoscopy unit you will work with the other band 6 colleagues and the endoscopy senior nursing team to ensure safe day-to-day clinical delivery to our patients.
You will provide a clear focus for clinical leadership across the department, and will be expected to undertake key operational management duties such as HR and day to day operational management. In addition, a contribution to the attainment of JAG Accreditation and operational delivery of the key performance indicators within the Endoscopy Unit will be expected.
This role will enable you to demonstrate both clinical skills and also leadership and people management skills within the clinical environment. A strong commitment to developing junior staff and acting as a role model at all times is essential. There will be opportunities to further develop your leadership skills formally with a number of study days and courses available to undertake.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Clinical Practice:
* To adhere to NMC Code of Professional Conduct at all times
* To demonstrate clinical expertise in the care of any patient receiving treatment in the department
* To assess, plan, implement and evaluate the needs of patients on the ward on an on-going basis, co-ordinating the care given by all members of the clinical team
* To accurately assimilate and interpret clinical information about the patients’ condition, promptly report changes and instigate remedial action as appropriate
* To act as a resource person to others, providing accurate information, advice and support to the multi-disciplinary team, patients and their relatives
* To ensure that patients and their relatives are updated regularly with accurate information, and ensure that this is presented in a way that they understand
* To ensure that Clinical guidelines are implemented and to be actively involved in auditing practice in conjunction with the ward manager and practice development staff
* To ensure that practice is evidenced based and with support, assist in the development of policies and protocols within the clinical area
* To uphold high standards of nursing care, according to existing policies and standards
* To support the Ward Manager / Matron in processes of continuous quality improvement, formally evaluating standards of care and assisting in the implementation of changes in the light of such findings
* To contribute to the health education of patients and their families, ensuring that all patients receive appropriate advice and support to maintain a healthy lifestyle
* To actively support the implementation of the Trust nursing strategy and uphold the ethos of the local philosophy
* To have regard for patient’s cultural and religious beliefs
* To respect each patient’s privacy, dignity, gender and sexuality
* To acknowledge personal limitations and seek advice from senior staff members
* To rotate to other departments within the speciality as required or as identified as a personal development need in the appraisal process
* To be involved with nursing audit/essence of care/observations of care
* To report adverse incidents which occur in the department as per policy. To assist in the investigation of such incidences
* To ensure contemporaneous record keeping at all times and in line with the Trust policy on documentation
* Ensure clear and accurate written and verbal information is given at all times, including patient handovers
* To maintain standards of hygiene and cleanliness within the clinical area, actioning remedy where appropriate and reporting deficits to the housekeeper and ward manager
Education and Research
* To actively promote and encourage the application of research andn evidenced practices and to participate in any research projects conducted in the clinical area
* To update knowledge in the light of current research and practice
* To act as a practice supervisor for student nurses/adaptation nurses/HCA’s
* To act as a preceptor/mentor to newly qualified staff
* To actively participate in the training process by demonstrating and directly supervising and by negotiating learning contracts
* To liaise with appropriate members of teaching staff, link lecturer/lecturer practitioner
* To actively promote and facilitate the GIN competency-based framework
Management
* To act as a role model at all times
* To exercise leadership where appropriate
* To contribute positively towards the delivery of a cost-effective service, adjusting staffing levels to meet demand and assisting the ward manager to keep within agreed resources
* To give support and advice to junior ward staff on both clinical and administrative problems
* To act as a team leader to an identified group of staff, monitoring and documenting the development of their clinical skills
* To develop own skills in recruitment and selection, sickness management and performance management as determined by the line manager
* To maintain confidentiality with regard to personal information pertaining to staff
* To actively support the process of risk management – ensure incidences are reported appropriately and helping to identify ways of preventing errors and accidents to both patients and staff
* To attend and contribute to departmental meetings as required including the Endoscopy Users
Group monthly meeting
* To ensure effective admission/discharge of patients whilst liaising with the administration team
* To keep the ward manager informed of significant changes in the day to day situation in the department
* To actively promote customer care, assisting in resolving local (informal) complaints and supporting the ward manager to investigate formal problems
* To act as a liaison within the multi-disciplinary team to ensure optimum, timely patient care
* To make a positive contribution to service development affecting the clinical area and positively influence others to adapt to change
* To observe a general duty of are for the health, safety and well-being of self, work colleagues, visitors and patients within the hospital, in addition to any specific risk management associated with this post
Personal professional development
* To work within and accept responsibility for maintaining agreed levels of clinical competence
* To keep up to date with NMC, Trust and Care Group policies and guidelines and to adhere to these at all times
* To be a fully active and committed member of the multidisciplinary team
* To demonstrate an insight into own professional development, contributing to the process of identifying own educational and clinical training needs in conjunction with the ward manager
* To participate in own performance appraisal with an initial three monthly and then six monthly review with the ward manager
* After appropriate training to be responsible for undertaking performance appraisal for junior team members
* To ensure own educational commitment is at least sufficient to maintain revalidation requirements and to ensure own mandatory training certificates are current, in liaison with the ward manager
Person specification
Education and Qualifications
Essential criteria
* 1st level Registered General Nurse with active UK NMC Registration
* Further professional studies relevant to the clinical area
* Mentorship programme or equivalent teaching qualification
Desirable criteria
* Degree in Nursing or Equivalent
