Overview
Liverpool University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to advertise for a Senior Clinical Fellow in Upper GI surgery, to be based at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, Liverpool. The vacancy for two posts will be required to be filled until 3 February 2026.
About the service
The trust has a supra-regional Upper GI Surgical service and is one of the largest Oesophago-gastric cancer units in the country. We also provide cover for complex Oesophago-gastric trauma and emergencies. The Unit includes five Consultant Surgeons and undertakes more than 200 complex Oesophago-gastric procedures annually. We cover a population of over 1.5 million in the Northwest of England, and the Isle of Man, and receive quaternary referrals from North Wales. This post supports the centralised Upper GI surgical service at RLUH and contributes to elective General Surgery, including Day Case Surgery, on the BGH site.
Responsibilities
* Participate in all aspects of the unit’s clinical work, including clinics, operating sessions, Multi-Disciplinary Meetings and ward rounds.
* Contribute to the emergency general surgical workload of the team.
* Gain specialist Upper GI surgery experience and emergency surgery exposure to consolidate readiness for a consultant post.
* Engage with minimally invasive techniques as available, including a developing robotic programme (benign and cancer work) and laparoscopic approaches.
Qualifications and requirements
* Potential applicants should have previous clinical exposure to Upper GI Surgery and be at ST7 or above level.
* Experience with or interest in endoscopy is encouraged; opportunities are available within an eligible JAG-accredited endoscopy unit depending on level of experience.
* Post-CCT or experienced senior surgical trainee considered advantageous for this post.

LUHFT Upper GI department is supported by two Specialist Trainees from North-west Mersey Deanery, two core trainees, one teaching fellow, one Trust SHO and six Foundation Year doctors.
