Highly Specialist Inpatient Orthopaedic Physiotherapist

Applications are invited from enthusiastic candidates for a Specialist physiotherapist to work within the Hillingdon Trauma and Orthopaedic Team. This post is based at Hillingdon Hospital.
This is an excellent opportunity to gain experience in working within an integrated therapy team and continue to develop strong multidisciplinary working within a dynamic acute setting. There is scope to develop new services and formulate new care pathways for patients within a supportive and friendly department and with our Hillingdon Health Care Partnership. This post would suit a therapist with extensive acute experience working within an inpatient Orthopaedic setting with both Trauma and Elective patients. The team also cover orthopaedic day cases, inpatient orthopaedic paediatric patients and outpatient adult amputees, they also hold the bleep for ED for appropriate patients. Ideally they should have a strong orthopaedic knowledge base, be effective with early walking aids and prosthetic rehabilitation, and have good clinical assessment skills and experience working as an autonomous practitioner as well as part of a team. The appointee will join the existing multi-disciplinary team, and work in conjunction with their therapy team across Medicine, Surgery and Orthopaedics.
Main duties of the job
* To provide highly specialised physiotherapy assessment and treatment for adult patients with complex needs, with an emphasis on inpatient Trauma and Orthopaedics.
* The orthopaedic team also treat day surgery cases outpatient Adult Amputees and Orthopaedic paediatric patients.
* To provide a specialised resource for other physiotherapy staff and health care professionals.
* To provide professional and clinical leadership within the Trauma and Orthopaedic therapy team and wider integrated therapy service structure contributing to the continuous development of the service.
* To work with the team lead and other senior therapists in the planning and coordination of the therapy services provided to patients across the inpatient setting.
* To undertake delegated responsibilities to support the Therapy Lead in day-to-day service operation, evaluation and development.
* Regularly provide formal and informal, on-going training and education to physiotherapy staff, medics, other healthcare professions and students.
* Engage in own continued professional development (CPD) and service development.
* Ensure clinical audits are undertaken to completion and learning and next steps communicated.
* Participate in the weekend working rota and on call respiratory service.

Job responsibilities
* To provide highly specialised care for patients with complex needs in the acute setting by taking an advanced role in the assessment and treatment of patients who may have diverse, acute or chronic presentation and highly complex physical and psychological conditions.
* Undertake a significant clinical caseload to a high professional standard, using specialist knowledge and skills from theoretical and practical experience.
* Using advanced skills determine a therapeutic diagnosis and provide treatment indicated, and maintain records as an autonomous practitioner and ensure others do the same.
* To be an active member of the multidisciplinary team recognizing the skills and expertise of others. This will include organisation and chairing of multi-disciplinary meetings, case conferences and family meetings where appropriate.
* To provide leadership of qualified and unqualified staff through supervision, support & appraisal / review in line with KSF and Preceptorship principles.
* To lead and undertake evidence-based audit to develop and enhance personal and teams clinical practice within their area. Make recommendations to clinical lead/manager of service for changes to practice. To assist in the implementation of specific changes to clinical practice, or contribute to changes in service protocols resulting from audit findings.
* To regularly supervise more junior therapy staff, assistants, and students on practice placement.
* To demonstrate flexibility in the provision of the service - this might include some cross-site or cross specialty working.
* To work with the ATOMS Therapy Team Lead and the Inpatient Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy manager and senior respiratory physiotherapists in ensuring a safe and competent On-call and Weekend service for Orthopaedics care is organised and delivered.
* To provide expert advice information and recommendations to Health and Social care professionals, carers and relatives in relation to your service.
* To provide skilled team leadership and be responsible for operational management, team development, implementation of policy and policy changes in own clinical area and monitor standards of practice.
* Contribute to the Trust Governance agenda including the delivery of safe, effective high quality care.
* To work cross‑professionally within competent skill base to provide trans‑disciplinary therapy input, being aware of own‑professional limitations.
* Play a significant role, with the ATOMS Therapy Team Lead, for the accurate and timely completion of Rehabilitation Prescriptions across the Trust including teaching and support for new starters.

Person Specification
* Degree or Postgraduate Diploma in Physiotherapy
* Current HCPC registration
* Clinical Educators Training
* Relevant advanced clinical training /courses
* Extensive post‑registration NHS experience which should be within acute Trauma and Orthopaedics
* Significant Band 6 experience in acute Trauma and Orthopaedics. Outpatient Msk experience is desirable
* Supervision of HCPC registered staff, support workers & students; including appraisal process
* Relevant MSc or other postgraduate training
* Management/Leadership training relevant to NHS
* Member of Professional Body
* Member of Professional Interest Group or Special Interest Network
* Post Graduate Training in Amputee Management
* Quality Improvement Training
* Experience of pre‑prosthetic and prosthetic amputee rehabilitation
* Research Experience
* Experience in community or social care settings
