Deputy House Master / House MistressRole Overview
The Deputy House Master / House Mistress plays a central role in supporting the pastoral care, welfare, discipline, and development of pupils within a boarding house environment. Working closely with the House Master / House Mistress and wider pastoral team, the postholder ensures that all pupils are supported to thrive academically, socially, and personally within a structured and nurturing residential setting.
This is a highly visible and influential role that requires a strong commitment to safeguarding, student wellbeing, and the promotion of high standards of conduct and achievement.
Key ResponsibilitiesPastoral Care & Student Welfare
* Support the delivery of outstanding pastoral care to all pupils in the house.
* Act as a key point of contact for pupils, providing guidance, encouragement, and emotional support.
* Monitor student wellbeing, behaviour, and academic progress, raising concerns where appropriate.
* Assist in the implementation of safeguarding policies and ensure the welfare of all pupils is prioritised at all times.
* Promote inclusivity, respect, and a strong sense of community within the house.
Boarding House Management
* Assist in the day-to-day running of the boarding house, ensuring a safe, structured, and supportive environment.
* Contribute to the organisation of house routines, activities, and events.
* Supervise pupils during evenings, weekends, and at key times throughout the school day as required.
* Maintain high standards of behaviour and discipline in accordance with school policies.
* Support with administrative tasks such as attendance, reports, and communication with parents/guardians.
Student Development
* Encourage and motivate pupils to achieve their full potential in both academic and co-curricular activities.
* Support the development of leadership, resilience, independence, and teamwork.
* Promote participation in extracurricular activities, including sport, music, and adventure training where applicable.
* Act as a role model, demonstrating professionalism, integrity, and positive behaviour.
Collaboration & Communication
* Work closely with the House Master / House Mistress, teaching staff, and support staff to ensure consistency in student care and development.
* Communicate effectively with parents/guardians regarding pupil progress and welfare when required.
* Attend staff meetings, pastoral briefings, and training sessions as necessary.
* Contribute to the wider life of the school community.
Safeguarding & Compliance
* Adhere to all safeguarding, child protection, and health & safety policies.
* Maintain confidentiality in all matters relating to pupils and staff.
* Undertake relevant training, including safeguarding and first aid.
Person SpecificationEssential Criteria
* Experience working with young people in a residential, educational, or youth development setting.
* Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
* Ability to build positive relationships with pupils and staff.
* A calm, approachable, and resilient nature.
* Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people.
* Strong organisational and time management skills.
* Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
Desirable Criteria
* Experience in a boarding school environment.
* Background in pastoral care, youth work, education, or the armed forces.
* Experience supporting extracurricular or outdoor/adventurous activities.
* Relevant qualifications in education, childcare, or leadership.
Working Hours & Requirements
* Full-time, residential role.
* Flexibility required, including evening and weekend duties.
