Job overview
Neurology services are based at The Princess Alexandra Hospital with outpatient clinics running onsite as well as at two community hospitals Herts and Essex Hospital in Bishop Stortford, and St Margaret’s Hospital in Epping. The post holder will be expected to deliver outpatient services across all three sites, and support inpatient referrals at Princess Alexandra Hospital where indicated.
Links with a number of tertiary hospitals have been established and joint appointments are established with Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (Addenbrooke’s Hospital) and Bart’s Health NHS Trust. This creates excellent links for sharing experience and knowledge and developing our consultant body.
There is an established outpatient service, seeing and treating general neurology patients referred by GPs and internally where clinically appropriate. Clinics also include urgent ‘first fit’ and fast-track appointments. The trust aims to achieve the national 18-week referral to treatment standards, national cancer standards, and to work towards NICE guidance. It also aims to support ambulatory services.
Although there is no established neurology ward or dedicated neurology inpatient beds at Princess Alexandra Hospital, referrals are made by ward teams to the neurology department for rapid assessment and advice on future management.
Inpatients and outpatients requiring specialist neurological services can be referred to neighboring trusts including Queen’s Hospital (Romford), Addenbrooke’s Hospital (Cambridge) and the Royal London (Barts/London) with whom we have established links.
