Assistant Materials Manager

The Assistant Materials Manager will assist the Materials Manager in managing the Receipts and Distribution (R&D) team and the Materials Management Teams at all Trust hospital sites to ensure suppliers meet the expected delivery performance required to satisfy the Trust's operational requirements.
The role requires liaison with the Materials Manager and potentially deputising in his/her absence, working with senior managers of the Procurement Department, and coordinating with service managers and clinicians to provide a high‑quality Materials Management service to users.
Main duties of the job
The Assistant Materials Manager will line‑manage Materials Supervisors, who in turn manage the materials teams. Line management responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
* Assist in the recruitment process.
* Induction and training of staff.
* Disciplinary, grievance, performance and sickness procedures for Materials Supervisors, Material Management officers and Receipts & Distribution staff on both sites.
* Annual performance appraisal and succession planning for the R&D and Material Management teams.
* Covering the Materials Supervisors on both sites.
* Managing annual leave for Materials Supervisors, Material Management officers and Receipts & Distribution staff on both sites.
Job responsibilities
The Assistant Materials Manager will support the Head of Procurement in the effective management of materials inventory to optimise the Trust's finances. The post will line‑manage the stores managers and their teams and also:
* Participate in CPEG meetings and events.
* Cover the Materials Manager in her absence, including CPEG queries.
* Complete escalation forms and demand‑managed stock, allocating demand‑managed stock across the Trust based on usage for both sites.
* Check stock levels of regularly used items, place replenishment orders, expedite orders and restock storerooms.
* Place urgent orders for critical items of stock up to £5,000 where required.
* Act as central contact for all wards and clinics regarding stock issues and complaints, being the first point of contact.
Supporting the development of processes and systems, the Assistant Materials Manager will prepare regular reports on services delivered and departmental performance, including but not limited to:
* Stock holding levels by requisition point.
* Supplier performance against agreed KPIs.
* Levels of excess, slow‑moving and obsolete items.
* Usage quantity and value.
* Planned and potential improvements.
Additional responsibilities include coordinating training for all staff within the R&D and Material Management team and promoting professional standards. The role will also contribute to NHS modernisation initiatives and professional development activities.
