Senior Device Product Engineer
Department: R&D
Employment Type: Full Time
Location: Plymouth
Description
You will be joining a growing team with strong expertise in fabrication and device characterisation & yield, where data-driven insight is used to guide decisions that improve performance. As a team, you will collaborate across R&D and production, driving new characterisation approaches, yield learning, and performance optimisation through to end-of-line testing.
Key Responsibilities
- Drive electrical and optical characterisation of devices and arrays, uncovering performance at the smallest scale through detailed measurement and analysis.
- Get hands‑on with manual and semi-automated probe stations, directly validating device behaviour and bridging the gap between lab and production.
- Capture and interpret key performance indicators including IV behaviour, optical output, uniformity, efficiency, and defectivity.
- Lead and support accelerated life testing and reliability studies, pushing devices to their limits to understand real-world performance.
- Investigate degradation pathways and failure mechanisms, turning data into insight on how and why devices evolve over time.
- Track and interpret long‑term stability trends, ensuring robust performance from lab to production scale.
- Dive deep into raw probes and test datasets using JMP (or similar tools) to extract meaningful patterns from complexity.
- Identify trends in yield, performance variation, and failure signatures, translating data into actionable engineering insight.
- Communicate findings clearly from large, complex datasets to influence engineering and process decisions.
- Help shape the future of testing by developing and refining measurement methods and test strategies.
- Support continuous verification of what is coming off the production line, ensuring every device meets performance expectations.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
- Proven experience of 6+ years in the semiconductor field, including at least 2 years industry experience within a Device Engineering or Product Engineer within a semiconductor manufacturing environment.
- Experience focused on device performance, characterisation, or electrical/optical optimisation.
- Strong background in device physics and measurement techniques.
- Hands‑on experience with probing, characterisation, or lab‑based testing.
- Strong understanding of semiconductor device physics.
- Strong analytical skills using tools such as JMP, MATLAB, or Python.
- Strong problem‑solving skills and ability to work with large experimental datasets.
- Demonstrates a proactive approach by anticipating technical challenges, taking initiative to improve device performance, and driving solutions without waiting for direction.
- Experience with stress‑testing capability and/or thermal characterisation would be an advantage.
- Experience with III–V semiconductors and optoelectronic devices would be an advantage but not required.
