Overview

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is one of the largest healthcare systems in the United Kingdom, employing approximately 40,000 staff across a wide range of clinical and non‑clinical professions and roles. The role

To provide person‑centred care to all patients undergoing surgical intervention in the Day Surgery Unit. This will be carried out in a safe and professional manner ensuring a high quality of service provision by a team of specialised staff.


Duration, Location, and Working Pattern

We have one part‑time post available for 24 hours.

Base location – Vale of Leven Surgical Day Bed Unit.


Key responsibilities

* Support the Registered Practitioner (RP) in delivering high‑quality pre‑, intra‑ and post‑operative care, following care plans, SOPs and local protocols.

* Assist with patient care activities such as personal hygiene, nutrition and hydration, tissue viability and continence care, and escalating concerns as appropriate.

* Utilise knowledge of routine and specialist procedures, including specimen and blood collection, ensuring specimens are correctly prepared, documented and dispatched in line with local policy.

* Clean, check and prepare specialist theatre and endoscopy equipment, ensuring compliance with infection control standards and patient safety requirements, and report any faults or discrepancies.

* Organise and prioritise own workload from a delegated list of duties, preparing the clinical area, checking equipment, organising instruments, linen, drapes and trolleys before procedures, and supporting contingency planning.


Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job

* Completion of NHSGGC in‑house training programme.
* Understanding and compliance with HCSW mandatory induction standards and code of conduct.
* Ongoing learning through relevant study days, practical training and teaching sessions.
* Awareness and understanding of policies and practices such as Accountable Items SOP, Infection Prevention and Control, Health and Safety and BLS.
* Ability to understand and use peri‑operative documentation accurately after induction and on‑the‑job training.
* Broad technical skills in checking and troubleshooting peri‑operative equipment and machinery (acquired through experience and on‑the‑job training).
* Enthusiastic, with excellent communication skills and ability to work as part of a team.
* Effective written, verbal, literacy, numeracy and IT skills (desirable).
* Achievement of core transferable skills to undertake activities within different theatre specialities within 3‑6 months.
* Potential to develop an enhanced skill level within a designated speciality within 12 months; may be required to work in more than one speciality.
* Knowledge of locations of stock items and familiarity with a range of items commonly used (enhanced knowledge within own speciality desirable).
* Good physical and dexterity skills.
