Applications are invited from enthusiastic and motivated individuals with specialist experience in haematology, blood transfusion or biochemistry for a part-time Band 6 post to work in our modern and well-equipped Multi-disciplinary Laboratory at Chorley Hospital.
** Please Note ** to be recruited to Band 6, applicants will be a HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientist with a Specialist Portfolio in Haematology/ Blood Transfusion/ Biochemistry or have the required pre-AFC qualification ('blue book').
Main duties of the job
Our Multilab is based at Chorley District General Hospital and provides Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Biochemistry analyses. The site provides specialist Oncology and Orthopaedic services along with routine services.
Our major equipment comprises Sysmex XN and CS series analysers in the Haematology section and the Roche Pure C303/ E402 combined Chemistry and Immunoassay modules in Biochemistry. Automation in Transfusion is provided by Diamed IH1000 analysers. The Trust has remote access Haemobank fridges which allows remote electronic issue of blood units.
You will be based at Chorley Hospital, however you may be required to work across sites at both Chorley and Preston hospitals.
The role can sometimes be quite physical, with moderate moving and handling requirements, therefore you will need to be able to move around the laboratory and assist in the movement of loads. The role is part-time, working 15 hours over three days (likely Monday, Tuesday and Friday).

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Duties to include but not limited to:
1. Performs work duties to the standards required as a HCPC Biomedical Scientist
2. Undertake the correct procedures for the handling of specimens, pre and post analysis.
3. Maintain and operate equipment used in the preparation and analysis of specimens.
4. Perform a range of laboratory tests autonomously and demonstrate an understanding of the scientific basis for tests and the disease processes under investigation.
5. Demonstrate awareness of factors affecting sample integrity, risks associated with the sample reagents, or method and other tests indicated by the outcome of the analysis.
6. Use the main laboratory computer system in accordance with service requirements

7. Degree suitable for HCPC registration
8. HCPC registered BMS
9. Completed registration portfolio or equivalent
10. Uses continuing professional development as a means of self- development

12. Experience of working in a Clinical Pathology laboratory as a BMS
13. Understanding of health and safety legislation pertaining to clinical laboratories
14. Understanding of factors affecting laboratory quality
15. Understand the use of quality management systems in a laboratory.
16. Understanding of pathology accreditation bodies

17. Familiar with Pathology LIMS
