Social Worker – Assessment Service & Multi Agency Safeguarding Hub

We are welcoming applications for Social Workers to join our Assessment Service and the Multi Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH) team. We welcome applicants from newly qualified workers through to senior social workers. This is a fantastic opportunity for a qualified social worker to work in a supportive, fast‑paced team committed to ensuring children and families are supported and safe.

The Assessment Service is composed of three teams of social workers who work quickly to establish trusted relationships with families in need of support and with children who may require protection. Managers are supportive and easily accessible, caseloads are well managed, and you will receive regular reflective supervision to help you make the best decisions for children in York.

When children need help and protection, MASH provides an effective single point of contact for all concerns about children. The MASH is made up of representatives from a range of agency partners, enabling children, young people and families to access the right level of support as quickly as possible. It is an exciting time to join York; successful candidates will be involved in driving a strong value base of good practice and in embedding our new practice model, Building Brighter Futures.

Successful candidates will receive continuous training, access to knowledge banks and will be part of the leadership group of the Building Brighter Futures practice model. A manageable caseload will allow you to form strong relationships with children, young people and the team around them. Our social workers work in a high‑challenge, high‑support environment with an established and committed team. Regular one‑to‑one supervision and peer supervision are provided.

Key responsibilities and requirements:

* Work independently, managing competing priorities and meeting timescales to deliver a good quality service for young people.
* Prepare clear, analytical, and coherent reports and assessments.
* Assess needs and write children’s plans that incorporate the voice of children, young people and families throughout the process.
* Demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills.
* Possess a CEFR level C1 spoken English proficiency (fluent and spontaneous).

If you are dedicated and want to make a difference for children and young people, apply now. If you are interested in a particular team, please state this in your application.

This role is suitable as a job‑sharing position.

Hybrid working arrangements are available. Working locations will be based on the requirements of the role and will be determined in collaboration with you during the recruitment process. Your contractual location will be the designated council office for your team.

City of York Council is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults and expects all employees to share this commitment. Successful candidates will need to undertake an enhanced Criminal Record Check via the Disclosure and Barring Service.

The Council offers generous annual leave, access to the Local Government Pension Scheme, comprehensive health and wellbeing initiatives, a rewarding package, flexible working practices, community engagement and volunteer activities, and promotes continuous learning and development. Additional discounts, rewards and savings are also available.

For further information or an informal discussion please contact Georgina Wright (Service Manager) at georgina.wright@york.gov.uk or on 01904 553443.

Closing date: Wednesday 26 November at 12 midnight

Interview date: Week commencing 1 December
