Job Overview: Head of Cardiac & Respiratory Physiology Services
We are seeking an experienced and dynamic leader to join Swansea Bay University Health Board as Head of Service for Clinical Physiology. This senior role combines strategic leadership with advanced clinical expertise to ensure the delivery of high-quality cardiac and respiratory physiology services across the Health Board.
The successful candidate will lead service planning, operational management, and workforce development, ensuring compliance with governance frameworks and national standards. You will drive innovation, manage budgets and resources effectively, and provide expert clinical input to support safe, efficient, and patient-focused care.
Main duties of the job
MAIN DUTIES
1. Lead and manage Clinical Physiology services across multiple sites, ensuring alignment with Health Board and Welsh Government objectives.
2. Oversee operational delivery, clinical governance, and quality assurance for cardiac and respiratory physiology services.
3. Shape strategic direction, champion innovation, and implement evidence-based improvements.
4. Maintain advanced clinical competence, running specialist clinics and providing expert interpretation of complex investigations.
5. Manage departmental budgets, capital planning, and resource allocation.
6. Foster multidisciplinary collaboration and represent the service at local, regional, and national forums.
7. Ensure robust education, training, and CPD programmes for all staff.

Essential criteria
8. Master's degree or equivalent experience
9. BSc in Clinical Physiology or equivalent.
10. Registration with AHCS or HCPC
11. Postgraduate qualification in a relevant specialty (e.g., BSE, BHRS).
12. Knowledge of human resource issues such as recruitment & retention, appraisal, performance management, capability, disciplinary etc.
13. Detailed knowledge of the principles of clinical governance & audit.
14. Knowledge, understanding and evidence of the application of financial procedures and budgetary management.
15. Detailed knowledge & understanding of professional ethics/ standards & code of conduct & their application in practice.
Desirable criteria
16. Management or leadership qualification.
17. Teaching qualification, student placement experience and/or clinical educators course.
