King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust – Consultant Cardiac Anaesthetist The closing date is 07 June 2026

The postholder will have significant involvement in the delivery of cardiac anaesthesia both during daytime cover and as part of the cardiac consultant on‑call rota. The department covers most anaesthesia specialities, and a dynamic individual with supplementary interests would be welcomed.

It is envisaged that the appointee will contribute to the development and delivery of aspects of these services depending upon their interests and experience.

The remit of the post holder will be to work flexibly within the multi‑disciplinary team providing and further developing care for patients requiring anaesthesia, particularly within cardiothoracic surgery. Additionally, the individual will be required to play an active role in the general workload of the Anaesthetic Department while having a significant commitment to teaching and training of junior staff.

Main duties of the job The post will be based mainly at Denmark Hill site and the proposed 10 PA Job Plan is attached. There will be an average of 8.5 Programmed Activities of Direct Clinical Care with the remainder being allocated for Supporting Professional and/or other Activities worked over an average of 3.5 days (this includes covering the non‑resident cardiac on call with a 1:7 or 1:9 frequency which attracts a 5% or 3% uplift).

All employees are expected to undertake work on any of the Trust's sites as required by the service. As a senior employee of the Trust you will work in close co‑operation with, and support other clinical, medical professional and managerial colleagues in providing high quality healthcare to the Trust's patients. Integral to these responsibilities is the following:

Provision of a first‑class clinical service

Effective leadership to all staff engaged in the specialty

Sustaining and developing teaching and research in conjunction with King's College London / KHP

Undertaking all work in accordance with the Trust's procedures and operating policies

Conducting clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trust's service plans

Maintaining the confidence of business plans and development strategies formulated for the specialty, the Division or the Trust

Job responsibilities (summarised):

Provide high‑quality care to patients, covering all treatment aspects and relevant management duties for the proper functioning of the Care Group.

Share responsibility with other colleagues, covering periods of annual leave and short‑term sickness as detailed in your contract.

Supervise junior medical/dental practitioners in coordination with other consultant colleagues.

Carry out teaching, examination and accreditation duties, contributing to CPD and clinical governance initiatives.

Attend outpatient clinic commitments in peripheral hospitals as agreed with the Care Group's management team.

Contribute to the Care Group's research interests in accordance with the Trust's R&D framework.

Participate in audit programmes, morbidity and mortality, clinical governance programmes and learning from deaths.

Take an active role in the formulation, implementation and monitoring of the Care Group's business plan, including discussions with internal and external agencies.

Perform all activities within the contracted level of service and operating plan.

Exercise professional leadership for all staff working in the specialty, fostering projects and ensuring ongoing professional education.

Work with clinical and other professional colleagues to maintain staff productivity and job satisfaction, including involvement in the appraisal process.

Undertake Care Group management duties as agreed with the Care Group/Departmental Manager/Clinical Director.

Comply with all Trust infection prevention and control policies, hand hygiene, personal hygiene, environmental and food hygiene.

Prepare for and undertake protective interventions in a manner consistent with evidence‑based practice and patient safety.

Contribute to consultant‑led 7‑day services and cooperate with other consultant colleagues for future developments.

Person Specification Qualifications & Higher Education

Full registration with GMC and completed subspecialty training programme in anaesthesia at time of appointment or equivalent experience.

On the specialist register at the point of taking up the post.

Training and Experience

Wide experience and accredited training in most aspects of anaesthesia, including cardiothoracic surgery, capable of delivering services appropriate to a large teaching hospital (e.g., maxillo‑facial surgery and day surgery).

Advanced cardiac training/fellowship and experience in TOE (trans‑oesophageal echocardiography).

Experience delivering anaesthesia at consultant level and supervising junior colleagues.

Accreditation in TOE (trans‑oesophageal echocardiography).

Administration

Experience in day‑to‑day organisation of anaesthetic services in a busy NHS hospital.

Management and Leadership

Experience in day‑to‑day organisation of anaesthetic services in a busy teaching hospital.

Demonstrated leadership capability within multidisciplinary teams.

Familiarity with current structure of the Health Service and recent initiatives and changes.

Management course and/or qualification.

Audit

Strong understanding of principles of medical audit and completion of audit projects.

Organisation of audit/journal clubs and morbidity & mortality meetings.

Research and Publications

Experience of clinical research.

Publication of relevant peer‑reviewed papers in the field of anaesthesia/transplantation.

Teaching

Experience of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and exam preparation.
