Overview

The Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust invites applications for a full-time post as Specialist Registrar in Cardiothoracic Surgery for 1 year, extendable to a maximum of 2 years. The post is based primarily at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford and the Cardiothoracic unit provides a service covering all aspects of adult Cardiothoracic Surgery, excluding transplantation. The department requires participation in clinical research, audit and teaching. This post is not approved for training and does not carry an NTN and would be most suitable for someone early in their training wishing to gain experience in Cardiac and/or Thoracic Surgery.


Main duties of the job

The post-holder’s duties will be primarily at the John Radcliffe Hospital with occasional contribution to clinics and inpatient care at the Churchill hospital. The post-holder will participate in the service’s inpatient and outpatient activities including operating theatre experience, regular MDTs and outpatient clinics, and postoperative rounds. They will participate in in-service training and teaching; training agreements will be made at the beginning of the appointment. They will participate in the full-shift cardiothoracic registrar on-call rota (currently 1:8 resident on-call), dealing with all cardiothoracic referrals and covering the Cardiothoracic Critical Care Unit on a full shift rota.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post-holder’s duties will be primarily at the John Radcliffe Hospital with occasional contributions to clinics and inpatient care at the Churchill hospital. The post-holder will participate in inpatient and outpatient activities, operating theatre experience, MDTs and outpatient clinics, and postoperative rounds. The post-holder will participate in the on-call rota and cover the Cardiothoracic Critical Care Unit on a full shift rota.


Person specification


Qualifications

* GMC Full Licence to Practice
* Completion of Core Surgical Training or equivalent
* 6 months training at registrar level in cardiothoracic surgery


Experience

* Evidence of achievement of ST2 competencies relevant to cardiothoracic surgery
* Experience sufficient to competently assist in cardiothoracic operations
* Experience sufficient to manage emergency cardiothoracic referrals
* Experience of managing/performing emergency procedures including emergency sternal reopening
* At least one completed audit or quality improvement project
* Teaching experience in medicine or other contexts
* Experience of publications or higher research degrees in Clinical Research


Skills

* Experience in chest drains, sternotomy, thoracotomy, conduit harvest and surgical assisting
* Leadership, organisational and professional skills to undertake this role
* Interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary colleagues
* Good spoken and written English for discussing referrals
* Knowledge of NHS organisation and care delivery
* Computing skills and ability to use electronic patient records
* Validated logbook demonstrating general surgical, cardiac or thoracic experience
