City Planning Officer

Salary - £35,235 - £39,513 (Grade 6)

Hours - 37

Contract type - Full time, permanent

Workstyle - Flexible

We have an exciting and exceptional opportunity to join City of Wolverhampton Council with a vacancy within the Planning Team for the position of a City Planning Officer.


The focus of this role is to help implement an action plan which prioritises the re-use and improvement of untidy buildings, and developing vacant sites including historic buildings and those within conservation areas, to help attract inward investment, improve the character of the targeted areas and contribute toward our wider Regeneration and climate action agendas.


With significant pressure for development in the City, untidy and vacant buildings and sites will be targeted within the city centre, Bilston town centre, Wednesfield village centre and our four district centres: Stafford Road (Three Tuns), Cannock Road (Scotlands), Tettenhall village and Whitmore Reans / Avion centre.You will also have a role in securing improvements around our major transport schemes particularly along the Willenhall Road, and the Stafford Road and Bilston Road corridors.

Role requirements:

* A degree or equivalent qualification
* Working towards eligibility for membership of the Royal Town Planning Institute
* Experience interacting with the public, representatives or businesses in challenging situations and environments

We are looking for a planning officer who preferably has experience dealing with a wide range of regeneration/ planning/ compliance/ heritage/ property matters.

This is a significant and high-profile role, which generates a lot of interest from Councillors, residents and landowners, therefore the ideal postholder will be confident at dealing with challenging people and situations offer a practical solutions based approach, while being passionate about protecting and improving the built and natural environment.


You will be responsible for making robust, sound judgements in relation to Planning Enforcement matters and to lead in pursuing formal compliance/enforcement action when necessary, including appeals and prosecution proceedings.


This role offers flexibility from working within the Civic Centre offices and agile working allowing you that extra freedom and work life balance.

Our working arrangements

All council roles are allocated to either a fixed, field or flexible work style.Some roles are agile which enable and empowers employees to maximise their performance and productivity, whilst maintaining a healthy work life balance.
