Shop Assistant Role Overview –
Customer Service and Retail Support
As a Shop Assistant at Briants of Risborough, you will be a core member of our shop team, ensuring all customers – both trade and retail – receive outstanding service from the moment they step inside the branch. You will provide knowledgeable advice on products, handle queries and purchases with accuracy, and maintain a welcoming, organised, and safe shop environment. Your efforts help strengthen our customer relationships and uphold our high standards of customer experience.

Main Responsibilities for Shop Assistant – Retail Sales and Customer Interaction
* Deliver a friendly and helpful service at the shop counter, engaging with a variety of customers and supporting their needs
* Handle product enquiries, recommend appropriate items, and provide advice on building and landscaping solutions
* Efficiently process cash and card transactions, issue receipts, and maintain accurate till records
* Ensure the shop floor and displays are well stocked, tidily merchandised, and all products are clearly labelled and priced
* Respond promptly and courteously to all telephone and in-person enquiries
* Work collaboratively with colleagues in the shop and yard to ensure seamless customer service and stock availability
* Assist in the receipt, checking, and shelving of deliveries to the shop area
* Maintain excellent standards of cleanliness and health & safety in all customer and staff areas
* Monitor stock levels, report low or out-of-stock items, and assist with regular stock counts and audits as required
* Report any customer feedback, issues, or shop maintenance needs promptly to the Shop Supervisor or Branch Manager
* Promote additional products and special offers to customers to maximise sales opportunities
* Promote and embody the values of Briants of Risborough and Lawsons at all times
What We’re Looking For – Ideal Candidate Skills and Experience
* Previous experience in a retail or customer service environment (preferred, but not essential)
* Confident communication skills, friendly and approachable manner
* Good attention to detail and accuracy in handling transactions and stock
* Strong organisational skills and ability to prioritise tasks effectively
* Comfortable working as part of a team in a busy branch atmosphere
* Basic IT literacy (EPOS, email, or stock management systems is a plus)
* Willingness to learn about building and landscaping products and keep product knowledge up to date
* Commitment to excellent health & safety and customer care standards
* Flexible attitude and willingness to support colleagues and customers as needed
Hours, Salary, and Benefits
* Full-time, permanent position
* Typical working hours: Monday to Friday 07:30–17:00, every second Saturday 08:00–12:00 (44.5 hours per week)
* Salary: £30,000 - £35,000,dependent on experience.
