Role Summary

This is a whole‑time NHS vacancy for a Clinical Fellow whose principal duties will run from 5th August 2026 to 2nd February 2027 in the Critical Care Unit at University Hospital Aintree. The successful candidate will work under consultant supervision at a level matched to their learning needs and experience, as part of a dynamic team delivering the best patient care.


Responsibilities

* Share responsibility for the assessment, resuscitation and treatment of all patients referred to the Critical Care Unit, working as part of a team with the on‑call ICU consultant.
* See patients in the Emergency Department, theatre recovery and the wards following referral from colleagues in other specialties.
* Work alongside trainees on a full‑shift rota and be resident in the hospital during the allocated working hours.
* Participate in the Medical Emergency Team.
* Take responsibility for ensuring ongoing medical education as agreed at directorate level.
* Provide direct clinical supervision, teaching of trainee staff, nurses and medical students.
* Assist in the provision and development of a safe, effective and efficient critical care service and support the Trust in its aim to provide the best possible care to patients.
* Carry out all duties at the highest possible standard, taking responsibility for individual patients in their care.
* Comply with Trust health and safety policies and the basic principles of infection control practice.
* Maintain good clinical records and effective working relationships with medical, nursing and allied healthcare professionals on the critical care team.
* Take an active role in departmental clinical governance activity.
* Give priority to the duties of the post at all times.
* Be allocated an educational supervisor and participate in regular appraisal and support the development of a learning plan and portfolio.
* Participate in an active audit programme and weekly educational meetings, including audit and M&M meetings.


Qualifications & Experience

Applicants should have completed Core Anaesthetic Training or equivalent, have full GMC registration and be eligible to work in the UK. This post is not approved for training and will not count towards a certificate of completion of training.


Employment Conditions

This whole‑time post is covered by the Medical and Dental Staff Terms and Conditions of Service, with time allocated for study leave and other educational activities. The appointment is initially for six months; extension beyond six months may be negotiable whilst in post. The candidate will work an EWTD‑compliant full‑shift rota. Salary will be dependent on the salary scale for the role and subject to additional allowances based on rota intensity.
