Job summary

Applications are invited for a fellowship-trained fixed-term 12 month full-time Locum Consultant post in Trauma & Orthopaedic Spinal Surgery. The successful candidate will have a major interest in Spinal surgery with fellowship training in complex deformity and spinal trauma. The post arises due to increasing volumes of complex spine conditions being treated at The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

A candidate who is unable for personal reasons to undertake the duties of a whole-time post will receive equal consideration. If such a candidate is appointed the job content will be modified as appropriate in consultation with consultant colleagues and local management.

We welcome all applications irrespective of age, disability, gender, sexual orientation, race or religion. Additionally, people with disabilities will be offered an interview providing they meet the minimum criteria for the post. The Trust operates job share and flexible working.

Main duties of the job

The appointee would be joining the Norwich Spinal Unit, within the Orthopaedic Department, and would be expected to participate in a tertiary spinal on-call service covering spoke hospitals on a Category A 1 in 6 basis, with no additional commitment to the general orthopaedic trauma on-call. There will be a commitment to sessions at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kings Lynn (QEHKL) and potentially the James Paget University Hospital (JPUH) in Great Yarmouth in a hub and spoke model. Whilst it is anticipated that lists at both QEHKL and JPUH will be for day-case patients, there are named consultants in both hospitals who provide part time cover for any patients requiring admission & patients requiring further interventions emergently are transferred to NNUH.

The Norwich Spine Unit performs the whole spectrum of orthopaedic spinal surgery and the appointee will be expected to have considerable experience of deformity surgery in both adults and children, complex spinal trauma management and also spinal oncological conditions. The successful candidate will need to manage degenerative cervical, thoracic and lumbar surgery both at NNUH and spoke hospitals, developing the provision of spinal care in the spoke units as part of the integrated regional care system.
