Clinical Coder (ACC)
The closing date is 09 April 2026
An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Clinical Coding department at Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust. We are looking for enthusiastic and motivated Accredited Clinical Coders to join our established professional Clinical Coding Team.
This role attracts a 15% recruitment and retention premium paid monthly in addition to your salary.
With the imminent implementation of our full Electronic Patient Record, we are able to offer fully remote or hybrid working. We welcome applications from ACC qualified Clinical Coders who live outside the Torbay geographical area and are interested in remote working. If you prefer office working, there is a dedicated coding office at the Acute Torbay hospital site.
Main duties of the job
As an Accredited Clinical Coder you will have experience coding a variety of specialties within an acute NHS organisation. You will bring a flexible and adaptable approach to support the provision of high quality, accurate and timely coded clinical data through effective extraction and analysis of complex clinical information, independent judgement in the interpretation and sequencing of clinical data, and adherence to national clinical coding standards, rules and conventions. This ensures the Trust data is accurate and robust.
The Clinical Coding Team is responsible for the extraction and translation of inpatient clinical information using the ICD‑10 and OPCS‑4 Coding Classifications. This information is essential for the effective management of the Trust and crucial to the National Tariff Payment System that underpins Trust income. Coded data is also important for clinical audit, governance and research.
The post-holder will be responsible for the clinical coding of inpatient and day‑case episodes across all specialties provided at Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust, liaising with clinicians and clinical teams on a regular basis to verify data recorded in the Electronic Patient Record. This ensures coding accuracy and integrity are maintained at the highest level.
The post-holder will also act as a mentor and assist in the training of less experienced coders.
