Job overview

The post holder will function as a Band 6 Clinical Educator, delivering high-quality education to enhance learning opportunities for undergraduate medical students across all specialties during their clinical placements at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals They will work in collaboration with the Undergraduate Medical Education Administrative Team to design, implement, and evaluate workplace learning initiatives.

In this role, the post holder will provide academic and pastoral support to medical students, ensuring they receive structured guidance throughout their placements. They will play a key role in delivering clinical skills training, including simulation-based education, to facilitate safe and effective learning for medical and other healthcare professionals.

Additionally, the post holder will contribute to the effective management and utilisation of Medical Education Centre facilities, maintaining a high-quality, safe, and accessible learning environment that supports excellence in medical education.

Main duties of the job

Plan, develop, and deliver structured learning for undergraduate medical students, ensuring alignment with GMC guidelines and university curricula during placements.

Promote a positive, inclusive learning environment for undergraduate and postgraduate medical professionals across the department and Trust.

Collaborate with the Undergraduate Medical Education Team to design and implement workplace learning initiatives, providing academic and pastoral support.

Identify educational needs and contribute to the planning, organisation, and delivery of training programs in line with protocols and care standards.

Develop and coordinate educational sessions, including simulation-based training for undergraduates and postgraduates, using a multidisciplinary approach where appropriate.

Monitor and evaluate clinical skills programs, supporting continuous improvement and recommending enhancements.

Serve as a resource for evidence-based practice, assisting staff in developing clinical skills and maintaining patient care standards.

Facilitate Wet Lab courses across specialties within the Medical Education department.

Deliver clinical skills training to postgraduate doctors, supporting competency development and clinical readiness.

This vacancy is advertised on a fixed term contract basis for a period of 12 months due to the post being recruited as part of a limited term project within the Trust. The fixed term contract status of the post holder will be reviewed in accordance with the Trust's legal obligations regarding fixed term contracts taking into consideration the requirement for the post to be maintained as a part of the project’s implementation and the timescales associated with this.

Please also note any secondment must first be agreed with your current line manager.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria

1. 1st Level Registration Nurse with valid NMC
2. To have completed the national practice assessor training or equivalent teaching and assessing qualification for those with ENB998 or working towards.
3. Evidence of continued professional development

Desirable criteria

4. Post Graduate qualification in related subject
5. Leadership qualification i.e., ILM or NHS leadership course or working towards.

Experience

Essential criteria

6. Extensive post registration experience at band 5
7. Able to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team crossing professional and organisation boundaries
8. Working Knowledge of Mandatory Training/ role specific training requirements
9. Evidence of leadership and management in a healthcare setting

Desirable criteria

10. Evidence of delivering education and training within the healthcare professional
11. Existing band 6 experience
12. Experience of producing educational audits

Skills and Knowladge

Essential criteria

13. Ability to deliver clinical skills including venepuncture, cannulation, catheterisation and ABG
14. Knowledge of policies in relation to clinical skills

Desirable criteria

15. Immediate Life Support Training (ILS)
16. Relevant understanding of Undergraduate Training and pathways
17. Understanding of Basic Surgical Instruments and procedures.
18. Relevant IT knowledge
19. Moving & Handling Key Trainer

Personal Qualities

Essential criteria

20. Excellent organisational skills with the ability to work to tight and conflicting. deadlines
21. Interpersonal Skills
22. Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
23. Ability to work within a team or independently
24. Ability to work flexibly and adapt to clinical requirements.
25. Ability to manage own caseload and prioritise accordingly
