Spinal Surgery - Combined Advanced Training Fellowship

The closing date is 30 November 2025.

We are offering a combined fellowship position in Spinal Surgery (Neurosurgery and Orthopaedic) for a period of 12 months. The job will be across both the ROH and UHB. Usually 6 months at each. There are 2 positions available each year.

Main duties of the job

The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (ROH) is one of the largest orthopaedic units in Europe and the oldest orthopaedic institution in the UK. It is a member of the Specialist Orthopaedic Alliance and recently celebrated its centenary on its present site. A small specialist teaching hospital, it has an annual turnover of around 67 million.

The Trust employs around 40 surgeons, 15 anaesthetists, 4 radiologists, 3 pathologists and 3 physicians. Although essentially an elective hospital, the Trust does provide an emergency service for spinal disease, as well as accepting patients for complex joint replacements for periprosthetic and pathological fractures.

The Trust offers 3 tiers of service. This comprises

* Routine orthopaedic care and operations for a local population of 1.4 million people in Birmingham and North Worcestershire,
* Specialist services such as spinal surgery and children's orthopaedics to 5 million people who live in Greater Birmingham and much of the West Midlands, and
* Specialised bone tumour surgery for the Northern two thirds of the United Kingdom.

The Spinal Unit provides a broad range of services for both adult and paediatric patients. The majority of patients are treated at the ROH, with some patients also treated at Birmingham Childrens Hospital NHS Foundation trust, and a small number treated in conjunction with Spire South Bank Hospital, Worcester. Around 1700 procedures are performed per annum.
