Job summary

Acute Oncology Service – Adult (Band 7) at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust seeks an experienced, motivated and dynamic Clinical Nurse Specialist for Acute Oncology/Cancer of Unknown Primary. The role is based at QMC and City campuses and involves early specialist input to oncology patients, review of complications, management of cancer treatment side‑effects, and autonomously providing assessment, triage, and care to complex acute oncology patients. The post is flexible to meet evolving service demands and includes opportunities to lead education programmes and develop clinical pathways.


Job responsibilities

* Work with the Lead Clinician for the AOS and CUP service and attend regular MDTs and meetings.
* Facilitate communication and coordinated care between primary, secondary and tertiary care providers in relation to acute oncology.
* Establish clinical pathways between primary and secondary care.
* Utilise specialist knowledge and skills to liaise with multi‑disciplinary teams involved with new diagnosis and management of patients with cancer.
* Autonomously provide specialist assessment, triage and care to patients with complex acute oncology needs.
* Offer compassionate, sensitive care ensuring physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs are met.
* Work with the CUP team to develop a service for this specialist group of patients, including MDT and outpatient clinics.
* Act as a clinical expert and professional resource for patients, carers and health care professionals.
* Influence patient care through indirect roles of providing specialist education.
* Develop and implement clinical guidelines, protocols and standards.
* Undertake audits and service developments within the AOS.
* Promote joint working and collaborative practices with colleagues, patients, carers, other health and social care professionals and statutory, voluntary and independent organisations to ensure optimum patient management and timely, smooth transition of patient care.
* Provide professional specialist leadership and effective management of resources, ensuring high standards of nursing care are delivered to all patients requiring input from the AOS.


Person Specification

Training and Qualifications (Essential)
* NMC registration – adult
* First‑Level Degree
* Training in administration of chemotherapy and experience of side‑effects
Training and Qualifications (Desirable)
* Clinical history taking / assessment course
* Formal leadership and management training
* Masters Degree
Experience (Essential)
* Significant post‑registration band 6 or above within an oncology setting
* Specialist knowledge and experience within oncology
* Leadership and management experience
* Teaching experience
Experience (Desirable)
* Previous experience within a CNS role
* Research and audit experience
Communication and Relationship (Essential)
* Excellent communication including verbal and written presentation
* Prepared to and experience in breaking bad news / sensitive information
* Understand the role of advocacy

* Experience of presenting such as conferences
Analytic and Judgement Skills (Essential)
* Ability to independently assess and interpret signs of symptoms

Salary

£47,810 to £54,710 a year per annum pro rota (Band 7, Agenda for Change).
