SPARK is the world’s first social science research park, co-locating world-leading social science researchers with private sector companies, public sector bodies, third sector organisations and local community organisations, working towards a common social purpose. The common social purpose is to create a wiser society – to help individuals, communities and organisations understand and develop solutions to the challenges it faces in ways that also contribute to fairer and more equitable outcomes.

The SPARK Hub team is looking to recruitstudents to undertake desk-based reviews and online scoping of research to support the development of 4 important areas of our work:

-Anti-racism and higher education – an exploration of research on anti-racism and anti-racist approaches to research within SPARK and Cardiff University (and beyond where time allows) supporting our SPARK Aim on building an anti-racist community and the development of our Anti-racist Living Lab (up to 70 hours)

-Refugees and asylum seekers – an exploration of research within SPARK and across Cardiff University (and beyond where time allows) on forced migration, refugees and asylum seekers including in relation to ‘sanctuary’ to investigate this as a cross-cutting theme (up to 70 hours)

-Responsible AI – an exploration of research using or focused on AI in SPARK and Cardiff University (and beyond where time allows), in particular responsible and ethical use of AI, supporting the potential for a SPARK research showcase event on this theme (up to 35 hours)

-Evaluation of community-based development – an exploration of research methods and approaches used in evaluating community-based development including evidence syntheses to provide support for our SPARK Third Sector Research Partnership and other areas of our work (up to 70 hours)

The students involved will be required to produce a summary, references and written blog output reflecting each of these explorations and their findings.

Students can apply for one of the above areas within the timeline available -PLEASE STATE IN YOUR APPLICATION.

Activity will include:

• Initial briefing, orientation and development of work plan

• Desk-based scoping and research including via Orca, Cardiff University intranet, Blas, search engines and research databases. Producing a summary, references and a blog piece for each of the four areas

• Regular meetings and tasks with research team as required

The hours are flexible and can be a combination of working remotely (UK BASED ONLY)and in the SPARK office in the sbarc|spark building on Maindy Road, but the the work must be completed by the end of July 2025.

Essential:

1. A degree in a relevant discipline, or equivalent experience

2. A good understanding of the topic selected

3. A proven ability to do desk-based research and produce clear outputs at quality

Desirable:

1. Postgraduate degree at MSC or PhD level (or nearing completion / submission) in a related subject area

2. Experience/knowledge of one or more of the research areas listed above
