Role context
HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) Wealthy compliance teams are responsible for the tax compliance of the UKs wealthiest individuals. The Assets Compliance Team is part of the Wealthy Individuals and Mid-Sized Business Compliance (WMBC) division within the Customer Compliance Group. The role focuses on resolving tax disputes and preventing non-compliance to close the tax gap for Inheritance Tax, Trusts, Stamp Duty Land Tax & Reserve Tax, Pensions, Savings and Transfer of Assets Abroad. Inheritance Tax (IHT) is a complex area requiring planning and collaboration across HMRC to ensure compliance aligns with strategic and policy objectives. The role supports colleagues undertaking enquiries into challenging IHT cases, including tax avoidance and evasion involving complex structures or bespoke arrangements.
Responsibilities
* Be part of the WMBC Assets Leadership Team, reporting to the Assistant Director.
* Support Inheritance Tax compliance caseworkers where checks have reached dispute stage and resolve through agreement, ADR, or litigation, within HMRCs Litigation and Settlement Strategy.
* Own and manage a caseload of complex Inheritance Tax work.
* Model Compliance Professional Standards and contribute to Professionalism Risk Plans.
* Establish and maintain professional relationships with senior stakeholders across HMRC, influencing and negotiating on business issues.
* Build capability across the team and directorate, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and identifying gaps in technical knowledge to support learning and delivery.
* Some travel (including overnight stays) may be required.
Person specification (Responsibilities)
* Conduct research to enhance technical knowledge and engage in continuing professional development, staying current with case law and professional literature.
* Communicate effectively with diverse audiences, tailoring written and verbal communication accordingly.
* Analyze and evaluate current legislation, practices, and processes to identify risks and propose improvements and practical solutions.
* Manage workloads independently with strong organisational skills and adaptability to changing priorities.
* Demonstrate self-awareness and resilience, collaborating to understand customers and colleagues’ perspectives and needs.
Essential Criteria
* Demonstrable recent experience providing UK IHT and Trusts tax advice, including Trust structuring, IHT planning, succession, estate advice, and ongoing compliance of Trusts and Estates.
* Demonstrable leadership experience in a tax planning environment.
* Excellent communication skills for diverse audiences, both verbally and in writing.
Qualifications
* Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA) or Chartered Accountant (ICAEW, ICAS, CAI, ACCA) qualification,
* STEP practitioner, or
* Be a qualified solicitor or barrister with post-qualification tax experience.
* Successfully completed the HMRC Tax Specialist Programme, or its predecessors (TPDP, IDP, ITS2, CPT, FT2).
Salary and Benefits
Salary: £56,344 – £62,590. Higher starting pay may be awarded based on experience. Flexible and hybrid working policies are supported. Leave starts at 25 days and increases up to 30 days with service. Pension contributions to Alpha scheme are at least 28.97% of salary.
