The role

CORE PURPOSE

We require an inspiring, highly driven Spanish Teacher to deliver high-quality modern foreign language instruction across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4. Operating within a vibrant, multi-cultural community school, the successful candidate will facilitate a structured, communicative curriculum designed to foster deep linguistic fluency, grammatical accuracy, and cultural literacy, preparing all pupils thoroughly for terminal GCSE Spanish public examinations.

KEY TASKS & DAILY OPERATIONS

  • Communicative Language Instruction: Plan, resource, and deliver high-quality Spanish lessons across all attainment pathways, embedding consistent speaking, listening, reading, and writing practices to demystify complex grammatical structures and phonics.

  • Closing Attainment Gaps: Identify and target deep-seated learning barriers, deploying structured scaffolding, targeted vocabulary retrieval cycles, and specialized literacy interventions to support all pupils, including those with Special Educational Needs (SEND).

  • Interactive Target Language Delivery: Create a highly immersive classroom environment, maximizing the use of the target language to build pupil confidence, spontaneous speech, and authentic pronunciation.

  • GCSE Performance Tracking: Guide Year 11 cohorts systematically through the demands of terminal Foundation and Higher tier GCSE Spanish papers, meticulously analysing mock scripts to refine exam technique, listening strategies, and extended writing marks.

  • Community Pastoral Care: Fulfill full form tutor responsibilities within an established year group structure, managing daily registration, delivering pastoral curriculum units, and maintaining proactive, supportive communication with families.

ENVIRONMENT & STRUCTURE

  • Local Authority Framework: Operating under the direct oversight of Portsmouth City Council, this traditional community school remains deeply rooted in local accountability, following standard national pay scales and prioritizing comprehensive, inclusive education for the surrounding neighbourhood.

  • Inclusive School Culture: The school features a warm, welcoming, and highly diverse campus environment. Behaviour systems are centered on clear, positive boundaries, restorative conversations, and mutual respect, establishing a safe, purposeful space for academic curiosity.

PROFILE REQUIREMENTS

  • Qualifications: Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or a recognised equivalent teaching credential, paired with a strong honours degree in Spanish, Hispanic Studies, or a closely related modern languages discipline.

  • Pedagogical Capability: A proven track record or clear capacity to deliver strong progress metrics in terminal public GCSE examinations across both Foundation and Higher tiers through structured, explicit pedagogy.

  • Inclusive Mindset: An unwavering commitment to comprehensive education, demonstrating the patience, cultural literacy, and adaptability required to inspire and support pupils in a highly diverse urban setting.

REGIONAL CONTEXT

  • Maritime Heritage & Coastal Exploration: Located in the historic naval city of Portsmouth, Hampshire, the school capitalises on a unique regional identity with deep maritime and international connections. This coastal context provides a rich real-world backdrop for modules on global trade, travel, and cross-cultural communication, linking language learning directly to the city's global outlook.

  • Connectivity & Infrastructure: The campus benefits from excellent transport links, providing straightforward road commuting via the M27, A3(M), and A27 coastal corridors. Public transit runs efficiently across the region, utilizing comprehensive bus networks and regular rail connections from Portsmouth & Southsea and Portsmouth Harbour railway stations, which offer regular Southern, South Western Railway, and Great Western Railway services directly to Southampton, Chichester, Winchester, and London Waterloo.
