Role

We have an immediate need for a Product Design Engineer with experience using CATIA V5 & Windchill.


Job Purpose

To develop innovative mechanical design solutions for current and future aerospace industry challenges, on existing and next generation smart motor and power generation technologies.

To lead and deliver project based engineering work‑package activities, ensuring mature and robust mechanical solutions designed to meet manufacturing, cost and weight targets.


Dimensions

Primary responsibility is to create and support the definition of robust mechanical design solutions for R&D/R&T projects, ensuring designs are technically robust, fit for purpose and meet business and customer needs.

Support and/or own one or more Engineering Work Packages for the Mechanical Design of products.

Interfacing with Mechanical Engineering, Stress & Thermal, Supply Chain, Industrialisation, Validation and Verification (V&V), Configuration and Quality.

Responsibility for the delivery of engineering solutions that meet Design to Cost and Design to Manufacture/Assembly requirements against programme deliverables.


Principal Accountabilities

* Improved awareness through regular reporting to Lead Engineers (Principal and Senior Principal) on work package status.
* Production and maintenance of CAD models, drawings and parts lists compliant with company standards.
* Production and reporting of Design Assurance documentation, including design reports, test procedures, hand/stress calculations, interference fits, thermal growth, hoop and tensile stresses, thread loadings and tolerance analyses.
* Removing risk by supporting engineering design investigations and Root Cause Analysis activities to develop mature products or concepts (new technology and improvements to existing product lines).
* Familiarity with Product Introduction Processes (PROMPT & DEVELOP) and leading or supporting gateway reviews.
* Authoring, reviewing, and (subject to client approval) signing off on technical documentation for Engineering and Through Life Support.
* Delivery of monthly KPI milestone targets to support project needs and timescales.
* Delivery of formal and informal training, mentoring and leadership support to engineering personnel to improve technical and behavioural skills.


Key Performance Measures

* Delivery of high quality, robust designs (models, drawings, BOMs, etc.) fit for purpose with DFA/DFM mentality and Right First Time philosophy.
* Increased satisfaction from internal and external stakeholders (communication, reporting, support).
* On‑time and on‑budget delivery of milestones and project tasks.
* High quality design assurance documentation aligned with process and procedural requirements.
* Consistent delivery of agreed KPI’s month on month.
* Achievement of performance objectives and personally development targets within agreed timescales.
* Support and mentoring leading to demonstrable skills growth within the team.
* Achievement of Engineering Approval status or higher.
* Nomination to Safran Specialist or Expert status or higher.


Essential Qualifications

* A mechanical, automotive or aeronautical engineering degree or equivalent qualification/work experience.
* Mechanical design experience using CATIA V5 & Windchill, with rotating equipment such as shafts, bearings, seals, structures, etc.
* Understanding of engineering materials and production methods relevant to them.
* Experience of electromechanical design and engineering using 3D CAD tools.
* Good working knowledge of MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
* Strong written and verbal communication skills, able to interact with all levels within the business and other engineering teams.
* Ability to plan work and supervise others to meet agreed monthly milestones/tasks; strong time‑management and prioritisation.
* Self‑motivation and ability to work on own initiative.
* Ability to work under pressure to meet project and programme deadlines.


Desirable Skills

* Direct experience with high‑speed power generation and motor technologies.
* Basic understanding of mechatronics and electronics.
* Experience dealing with internal/external customers or stakeholders.
* Experience working with engineering service suppliers (defining Statements of Work and approving deliverables for outsourced staff).
