Clinical Nurse Specialist- Roald Dahl Paediatric Epilepsy

A unique opportunity has arisen for an experienced Band 7 nurse to join the neurology service as a Clinical Nurse Specialist for Epilepsy This exciting role will challenge both your clinical and leadership skills and provide the opportunity for you to gain differing experience in this rewarding environment.


Main duties of the job

As a clinical nurse specialist you will provide care, support advice and education for children and young people with a diagnosis of epilepsy.You will be involved in providing supportive care to children during acute admissions and during outpatient appointments. You will work closely with members of the MDT. Teaching and training is an integral component of this role both to staff, families and children.

This role is essential in supporting patients and families from diagnosis and ongoing care and management of epilepsy. You will be required to assist in nurse led clinics and supporting GP's and schools.

Job responsibilities

Clinical Practice and Care Management

* To establish a nursing service for newly diagnosed and unstable epilepsy service by receiving direct referrals from A&E, GPs and establish nurse-led epilepsy childrens clinics
* To offer an epilepsy service that aligns with nationally recognised protocols and policies, including NICE Quality Standards, to ensure children and young people receive the best possible care according to their needs
* To support the prevention of A&E attendances by providing follow-up after an A&E attendance of a child with epilepsy in conjunction with the wider MDT
* To support the safe and early discharge of epilepsy patients from hospital by providing education and supervision and follow-up clinics post discharge to avoid readmission
* To establish and maintain individual and team communication networks within primary and secondary care settings to ensure multi-disciplinary and multi-agency epilepsy educational programmes

Leadership and Management

1. Empower children and young people and their families/carers through appropriate support and education.
2. To act as a resource for the childrens community nursing team, primary care and secondary care other community and multi-agency/multidisciplinary groups
3. Have the relevant skills to communicate complex and sensitive information to clients/ carers where there may be significant barriers to understanding. Communication will include both spoken and written methods
4. Follow best practice epilepsy standards in accordance with national, regional and professional standards

To participate in the operational and strategic development of the specialist epilepsy service, both in and outpatients.

Education and Research

* To ensure appropriate information and educational literature is available to help patients make informed choices as to their treatment plan and continuing management.
* To implement programmes of education and training in accordance with the identified needs children, young people and families and other healthcare professionals involved in their care.
* To contribute to the development of nursing practice within the Child Health Dept. Additionally, where appropriate, to act as a practice supervisor to Trust and honorary contract employees.
* To participate actively in educational events provided by the Trust, primary care sector and the Roald Dahls Marvellous Childrens Charity


Person Specification


Qualifications

* NMC Part 1 (Children)
* A clinical expert either through formal qualification (Degree / Masters) and / or extensive clinical experience pertinent to Epilepsy
* Recognised teaching/mentoring qualification


Skills

* In depth knowledge of professional and current issues in children's nursing and healthcare
* Track record of innovating services
* Ability to build up a rapport with patients and the MDT
* Ability to impart complex information to patients, parents and carers, with different levels of understanding
* Ability to work independently and as part of a team


Personal attributes

* Strong leadership skills
* Computer literacy at intermediate level
* Excellent oral and written communication skills
