About the Role
We are seeking a technician to help with sample preparation and testing within our busy Geology and Geomaterials department. The department comprises an enthusiastic team of Geologists and Materials Scientists whose principal work is in the analysis and failure investigation of construction materials of various types including concrete and natural stone. As part of this, it is necessary to prepare thin sections of rock, concrete and other construction materials for microscopic analysis. This role provides the opportunity to work with and learn about a wide selection of natural and man-made construction materials. Additionally, the successful candidate will interact with experts from other departments within the firm. This is a full-time permanent position based in our laboratories in Clapham, London.
We are aiming for this position to start mid-April 2026 or, ideally, sooner.
Responsibilities
* Prepare samples for testing.
* Cut, grind and polish samples to ready them for testing and analysis.
* Arrange and organise own work to meet laboratory sample preparation instructions and schedules.
Qualifications
* Training/education in Geology.
Required Skills
* Ability to learn new skills.
* Ability to operate machinery such as diamond saws, grinding and polishing machines (specific training given where necessary).
* An interest in construction materials.
* Good attention to detail.
* Good IT skills.
Preferred Skills
* Prior experience of thin section preparation (not essential as training will be provided).
