Assistant Principal Lawyer - Housing and Civil Litigation Team

Overview
We are recruiting a Housing and Civil Litigation Assistant Principal Lawyer to join our Local Authority client's legal team. The role involves managing and developing the team while handling a varied caseload including general residential/commercial property advice, disrepair, homelessness, judicial reviews, debt recovery, and other civil litigation work. The position is hybrid, requiring office attendance two days per week and court appearances.
Key Responsibilities
* Work closely with the Principal Lawyer and other Assistant Principal Lawyers to manage, develop, and assess team performance.
* Advise and manage a varied, complex caseload of housing and civil litigation matters such as homelessness, possessions, disrepair, and general civil litigation.
* Provide advice on high‑profile and sensitive matters to senior officers and elected members at council meetings.
* Represent the team in client liaison meetings, offering clear and practical advice to support service delivery.
* Supervise, mentor, and support team members, including junior lawyers and legal assistants.
Qualifications & Experience
* Qualified solicitor, barrister or CILEx lawyer with Litigation and Advocacy Rights or Higher Rights, holding a current practising certificate.
* Experience in housing law and civil litigation, with prior local authority experience required.
* Demonstrated ability to manage a complex caseload and mentor others in doing so.
* Strong communication skills, confident advising senior stakeholders and elected members.
* Capable of working full-time on a hybrid basis, with office attendance two days per week and court attendance as required. Applicants wishing to work four days per week may be considered.
