Job Title: Mechanical Estimator
About the Role
This is an exciting opportunity to transition from mechanical delivery into commercial estimating within a supportive environment that values practical experience and offers structured development. You’ll play a pivotal role in shaping bids that win work and directly influence project success long before the first pipe is installed.
We’re seeking a motivated Mechanical Estimator to join our commercial team, offering a clear pathway from a hands-on mechanical trade background into a key estimating and commercial role. The ideal candidate will bring strong practical experience in mechanical building services, site work or installation, and a desire to apply that expertise into cost planning and bid development for projects spanning public and private sectors.
As Mechanical Estimator, you’ll be responsible for preparing accurate and competitive mechanical estimates for a variety of projects - from planned maintenance and refurbishment works to full mechanical service installations and upgrades. You’ll work collaboratively with project managers, engineers, suppliers and subcontractors, supporting bid submissions, commercial analysis, and pre-construction planning.
Key Responsibilities
*
Prepare detailed mechanical cost estimates and tender submissions for a range of mechanical building services projects, drawing on practical knowledge of installations and site processes.
*
Undertake quantity take-offs from drawings, specifications and site surveys to determine labour, material and plant requirements.
*
Liaise with suppliers, subcontractors and internal teams to obtain costs, validate assumptions and ensure competitive pricing.
*
Assist in reviewing mechanical design information, specifications and scope of works to ensure accurate costing.
*
Support commercial and risk analysis, contributing to value engineering and tender strategy discussions.
*
Maintain and update estimating records, pricing libraries and historical cost data.
*
Provide technical input into pre-construction meetings and client briefings as required.
What You’ll Bring
*
Background in mechanical trades or on-site mechanical engineering (e.g., HVAC, plumbing, pipework, commissioning) with a strong understanding of mechanical building services.
*
Practical experience of installation methodologies, reading drawings and understanding build-up of mechanical systems.
*
Good commercial awareness and attention to detail - comfortable working with numbers, measurement and cost data.
*
Strong communication skills with ability to engage and build relationships with suppliers, subcontractors and internal stakeholders.
*
Proficiency in Microsoft Office; exposure to estimating or take-off software is desirable but not essential.
*
A willingness to learn and develop estimating and commercial skills, with support from experienced team members
