Matchtech are supporting the recruitment for a key client within the Rail industry for a Testing & Commissioning / CAD Engineer - Light Rail, Signals & Systems. This is a 4-6 month initial contract, offering outside IR35 working and working on a hybrid basis from Birmingham.
About the Project
Our client acts as senior design partner in the £1.3 bn Midland Metro Alliance, delivering six tramline extensions, covering ~54 km including 34 km double track and 80 stations/tram stops.
Scope includes track alignment, overhead lines, signalling, power, telecoms, systems integration, and the UK's first catenary-free tram sections.
The extensions support major connectivity boosts - to HS2 (Curzon Street), airport, Brierley Hill, Eastside to Solihull - extending to 2026-27.
Role Overview
We are seeking experienced Testing & Commissioning Engineers, T&C Technicians, or CAD Technicians with strong backgrounds in light rail, signalling and systems design. Your expertise will ensure successful system integration and commissioning.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and execute test plans covering signals, track, SCADA, OLE, power, and communications.
Coordinate with internal teams, contractors (e.g., Colas Rail), and WMCA stakeholders on T&C phases.
Perform on-site activities: factory/site acceptance testing, first-run commissioning, resolving interface issues.
Create and maintain technical documentation: test procedures, interface control documents, CAD drawings, and specifications.
Validate signalling systems: MOVA/SCOOT (if applicable), platform-tram clearances, junction priority, and safety requirements.
Support configuration management, design verification, and compliance with CDM and rail safety standards.
Candidate Requirements
Background in light rail/trolley/tram systems, ideally involving signals and systems T&C.
Proficient in CAD (AutoCAD, Rail-specific tools).
Proven experience with testing & commissioning in rail transit environments.
Strong systems engineering and interface coordination skills.
Knowledge of rail standards, health & safety, and UK CDM regulations.
Active willingness to be based in Birmingham, with flexible arrangements for outstanding talent.
Availabilty for immediate start; commitment for 4-6 months, with potential extension.
Open to both inside and outside IR35
