Are you passionate about helping students who've been struggling in mainstream education rediscover their love of learning? Want to make a real difference through personalised 1:1 tutoring with young people who need you most?
The Platform Project is an innovative social enterprise with a difference. We work closely with local authorities, education institutions and local employers to bridge the gap between education and employment through our unique concept of a 'training workplace'. This role focuses on our DISCOVER Tutoring programme, delivering personalised 1:1 Maths and English tutoring to young people aged 11-18 who struggle to engage with mainstream education.
About The Role:
You'll work 1:1 with students who have complex needs – they may have EHCPs, additional learning needs, or SEMH challenges that prevent them from thriving in traditional classroom settings. Many of our students have been out of education for significant periods and need a patient, creative approach to help them re-engage with learning.
You'll deliver Key Stage 3 & 4 curriculum content in Maths and English (GCSE and Functional Skills) as well as catch-up sessions on education they may be missing from not attending full-time education. Using creative and engaging techniques that move beyond traditional "listen and learn" classroom approaches will be important. Knowledge of students' abilities will be provided where possible, but you'll conduct your own diagnostic assessments to gauge their current level and tailor your approach accordingly.
As DISCOVER works alongside our ENGAGE and ASPIRE Alternative Provision programmes, when your tutoring timetable isn't full, you may spend time working as a youth trainer on these programmes. This will help you understand the needs of your students and develop a "relationship first" approach that builds trust and motivates engagement.
The full role profile can be found on our website, but key roles and responsibilities include:
* Creative Learning Delivery: Use a range of different, fun and creative learning techniques, activities and resources to help students engage in ways that avoid traditional classroom study styles.
* Relationship Development: Build trusting, trauma-informed relationships with students who haven't had positive educational experiences, helping them learn to love learning again.
* Personalised Tutoring Plans: Create customised tutoring plans to achieve academic goals, typically Key Stage 3 or 4 'catch up' for missed education or additional support to achieve GCSEs or Functional Skills qualifications.
* Progress Monitoring: Use appropriate assessment tools to monitor progress, provide regular feedback to inspire continued development, and maintain accurate records in our learner tracking system.
* Safeguarding & Pastoral Support: Be approachable and supportive, identifying any potential safeguarding concerns and promptly raising them with a Designated Safeguarding Lead.
About The Ideal Candidate:
We're looking for experienced tutors or teachers who are passionate about making a difference for students who need a different approach. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of two years' experience tutoring or teaching young people, with experience in functional skills and/or GCSE Maths & English, plus at least two years' experience working with young people with additional learning or SEMH needs.
You must be patient, inclusive, resilient, flexible and creative – someone who is student-focused and thrives when working as part of a small team to bring about transformation in the lives of challenging but vulnerable young people. You'll be able to build rapport that isn't based on an authoritative approach, and you'll be a strong communicator comfortable liaising with a range of professionals.
How to Apply:
If this sounds like the ideal role for you, please submit your CV. Following an initial review, candidates progressing to the next stage will be invited to complete an application form. Alternatively, you can contact The Platform Project to find out more.
The Platform Project is committed to safeguarding and promoting the safety and welfare of children and young people. The appointment is subject to an enhanced DBS check (including a check against the Children's Barred List) and satisfactory references.
