A leading financial services institution is seeking an experienced Senior Legal Counsel – Data Specialist to join its specialist team. This role provides legal guidance on privacy, data use, emerging technologies, and regulatory compliance, supporting a wide range of business functions across the organisation.
As part of the Data Legal team, you will help shape privacy by design approaches, advise on complex data matters, manage legal risks, and contribute to strategic initiatives involving innovative technology, regulatory change, and customer/colleague data use.
Key Responsibilities
1. Provide specialist legal advice on data protection, privacy, and related regulatory issues across the organisation.
2. Support new products and customer propositions from a privacy and data risk perspective.
3. Advise on emerging technologies, including AI, biometrics, and digital marketing practices.
4. Lead and support complex contract drafting and negotiations involving data and technology.
5. Guide the business on cookies, marketing compliance, and colleague as customer initiatives.
6. Provide legal oversight during cyber or data breach incidents.
7. Monitor regulatory developments and conduct horizon scanning to inform internal stakeholders.
8. Deliver training, practical guidance, and risk management support to business units.
9. Ensure all data related activities comply with relevant laws and internal policies.
You should be a qualified lawyer with strong expertise in data privacy law, including GDPR and international frameworks, and a good grasp of commercial, technology, IT, or outsourcing contracts. The role requires clear communication skills, strong judgement, analytical ability, integrity, and a commercially minded approach when working with stakeholders.
Useful additional experience includes knowledge of freedom of information or open government laws, familiarity with financial services products and operations, and the ability to deliver practical, innovative solutions in a fast moving environment.
