Job Overview
This is an exciting time to be joining Wirral University Teaching Hospital as we develop our brand new Sterile Services Department. Phase 2 of the project will begin in February 2026.
The Sterile Services Department is on the Arrowe Park site with a stand‑alone Theatre Endoscopy Decontamination Unit on the Clatterbridge site.
The post holder will be required to manage and oversee the day‑to‑day operations of the Sterile Services Department, ensuring robust systems of communication, governance and financial management.
You will report directly to the Associate Director of Operations for Peri‑operative Medicine.
The Trust has a Decontamination Lead who will provide support and guidance to ensure regulatory standards are maintained.
Responsibilities
* Provide operational management of the Sterile Services Department and deliver a flexible & responsive service that meets customer needs.
* Ensure continuous quality improvement and manage change to meet organisational objectives and the evolving healthcare environment.
* Provide Trust‑wide decontamination advice to managers on compliance of equipment, procedures and decontamination processes to current standards.
* Maintain national decontamination standards within the department and engage with other hospital sites whose instruments are sterilised daily.
* Lead the operational development of Decontamination Services for the Trust, advising accountable managers on statutory and regulatory requirements and maintaining compliance with ISO, HTM, IPG & CQC standards.
* Ensure robust systems of communication, governance and financial management, and act as a key point of leadership for the department.
* Lead projects relating to Sterile Services.
Qualifications and Experience
* Educated to Master’s level or equivalent work experience.
* Previous leadership experience.
* Extensive knowledge in decontamination standards and processes and willingness to access appropriate training.
* Qualification in sterile services.
* Comprehensive knowledge of peri‑operative practice.
Knowledge and Skills
* Good financial knowledge and budgeting.
* IT skills (EDCL or equivalent experience).
Desirable Criteria
* Experience writing business case / cost‑benefit analysis.
* Ability to act at all levels during periods of staff shortages.

Additional Information
Trust policy requires that the cost of submitting and processing a DBS application is met by the successful applicant(s). DBS costs are recovered via salary deduction following the start of post. If the post requires a DBS, the cost will be deducted from salary in manageable monthly instalments for up to three months following commencement of employment.
