Technical Lead – Networks and Security

This role is eligible for visa sponsorship under the UK Visas & Immigration (UKVI) Skilled Worker route. Sponsorship can only be provided where applicants meet the specific requirements set by UKVI, including the relevant skill and salary thresholds, and any role‑specific criteria.

Responsible to the Head of Architecture and Technology, this position is responsible for the highly complex area of Networks and Security. The support and technical transformation of the technical environment is a key component of both the clinical and IT strategy.


Main Duties & Responsibilities

* Provide highly specialist expertise and advice to IT colleagues, clinicians, directorate managers and directors.
* Lead on policy development for procedures and systems that support an effective and efficient service, meeting standards specified by the Trust and wider NHS.
* Work alongside the Head of Infrastructure to develop and plan the future technology roadmap for the Trust.
* Ensure 24/7 availability of the Trust's networking platforms, providing efficient and uninterrupted access to key Trust applications and services.
* Monitor performance and capacity of networks, undertaking activities to secure and enhance service availability.
* Manage the business‑as‑usual activity for the team to ensure appropriate response and support to users.
* Lead the team of network engineers and specialists, serving as a point of technical contact and escalation.
* Evaluate skillsets, coordinate and develop staff through training and knowledge transfer.
* Maintain operational effectiveness of network and security platforms, ensuring efficient and uninterrupted access to key Trust applications and services.
* Manage hardware and software lifecycle and refresh planning for network and security platforms.
* Develop proposals and recommendations for software or applications to meet client needs, presenting them to target audiences using negotiation and persuasion skills.
* Provide information and advice to clients regarding third‑party procurement projects; lead on delivering aspects of these procurements within the IT Networks function.
* Understand and discuss highly complex requirements, and make recommendations to managers with varying technical knowledge.
* Plan and deliver complex training to managers with varying IM&T skills, and deliver to large audiences when necessary.
* Define policies and standards for all aspects of network projects, ensuring they are implemented.
* Ensure adoption of national and international standards for scoping and systems analysis.
* Act as the last stop for extremely complex problems or issues related to Trust networks or their integration into the server estate, identifying root causes and recommending, planning and implementing solutions.
* Develop, maintain and interpret a large number of diverse and highly complex information and data sources.
* Have a thorough understanding of NHS structure, KPIs, working practices and legislation relating to data and information handling.
* Make recommendations on the impact of new legislation internal and external to the Trust.
* Work to the latest cyber‑security standards to ensure the Trust’s security posture is optimally positioned, including joint projects with counterparts such as AV, SIEM, MDM, NAC, etc.
* Collaborate with specialist third‑party partners to deliver technical solutions and stay up to date with emerging technologies.
* Work with managers, clinicians and operational staff to ensure wide understanding and commitment to the Trust’s IT strategy, and appropriate participation in associated IT programmes.
* Allocate resources appropriately, in collaboration with the Head of Architecture and Technology, including human and financial resources.
* Contribute to strategic and contingency planning for the wider IT function.


Person Specification

* Educated to master’s level or equivalent extensive experience in a senior specialist area.
* Knowledge and understanding of NHS structure and organisation.
* Technical expertise: deep knowledge of Juniper Junos OS, routing protocols (BGP, OSPF), switching, SD‑WAN, VXLAN, DHCP/DNS.
* Troubleshooting: diagnosing and resolving complex network issues, performing root‑cause analysis and incident resolution.

Salary

£66,582 to £77,368 per annum, pro rata.
