Job overview

Additional allowances will be paid based on rostered hours and the frequency of your participation on the rota. The Trust is compliant with the European Working Time Directive.

This is a 12-month post from August 2026, open to all post-Primary FRCA (or equivalent) anaesthetic trainees, who wish to develop a further interest in peri-operative care.

The trainee will have their rota amended for education commitments and will have time dedicated to spend in staff training, education and possibly peri-op projects, depending on the project needs, with the remainder of the time allocated to clinical commitment and on-call requirements.

The post would suit an individual at CT3/CT3+ equivalent level.

There is a full on call commitment expected from the post holder.

Main duties of the job

Post aims 1. Develop in-depth knowledge of optimal Peri-operative management of complex patients 2. Demonstrate QI and research capability skills 3. Contribute towards a business case and service development for Peri-operative medicine at the Trust 4. Contribute to an impact driven research project related to key Trust priorities 5. Register and complete a PG cert in Healthcare leadership and commissioning By the end of the year the Fellow will have: 1. Gained broad experience working in a multi-disciplinary Peri-operative team including development of leadership skills, person-centred goal-orientated decision-making, risk stratification including the clinical use of risk scores 2. Attended pre-operative high risk clinics and CPET, with attendance at relevant Courses 3. Undergone research and QI training encompassing from project inception to manuscript submission and presented at an international conference 4. Gained insight and contributed to a business case at the Trust.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Peri-operative medicine is a growing field, in response to the increasing complexity of patients undergoing elective and emergency surgery. There is now a national centre for peri-operative care https://cpoc.org.uk/ with a drive to integrate care across the patient pathway, before, during and after surgery. Worthing hospital has a long-standing reputation for research and innovation. The Fellow posts are split, comprising clinical work, service development, QI and research and will be supervised by two experienced clinicians with a track record delivering in this area. Dr Hodgson have multiple publications in the field with longstanding expertise encompassing pre-operative assessment including CPET to risk stratification, optimisation of the critically unwell and rehabilitation. The posts are available from August 2026 and are intended for doctors with anaesthetic experience and a strong interest in Peri-operative medicine. The successful applicant will work under the supervision of Dr Luke Hodgson, Consultant in Intensive Care and Peri-operative medicine. The post will provide opportunities to perform clinically applicable research and QI. The successful candidate will be able to continue clinical work with an individualised timetable designed to further their interests and expertise. Post aims 1. We are looking to appoint candidates who can demonstrate evidence of an active interest in improving the quality of care provided to patients. You will be capable of managing projects both independently and under supervision and be skilled at team working. Regular supervision meetings with an experienced training Consultant will help you shape your future career. Full allowance of annual leave and study leave is awarded. Study leave allowance will be at the discretion of the Fellow Lead or Chief of Surgery depending on evidence of effective use of non-clinical time. The clinical work (as a member of the on call rota) will be able to work at an appropriate level for their seniority. During initiation of a Peri-operative team the fellow will be able to contribute to baseline data collection to inform both the service and to allow impact assessment. There are a number of projects that will be available for the fellow to lead on including the development of a Peri-operative enhanced recovery proforma for emergency laparotomies and an observational study using smartwatch technology to observe recovery following such presentations

Essential criteria

1. •Basic medical degree
2. •Completed at least two years postgraduate training at CT1 and CT2 level in a relevant training programme.
3. •Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice
4. •Advanced Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent
5. •Completion of Initial Assessment of competence (IAC) and Initial Assessment of Competence for Obstetric Anaesthesia (IACOA)
