Job overview

The Sight and Sound Directorate at Great Ormond Street Hospital is looking for two dynamic and experienced paediatric nurses to join our team working within the ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat), Dental and Maxillofacial Services.

We have two Nurse Specialists posts, one for ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) and one for Dental and Maxillofacial. These are clearly defined clinical roles, however you will be expected to cross cover to provide a continuity for the services and provide support and nursing expertise to enhance patient service and experience.

The role involves ensuring that patients are safely and appropriately reviewed prior to admission to the ward for surgical procedures. The Nurse Specialist will provide expert nursing knowledge to support the patient and families journey from pre-admission to surgery through to discharge home or into the community. A large element of the role requires supporting the nursing care on the ward and liaising with members of the multi-disciplinary teams.  

You will be an integral part of Panther ward where there are 14 inpatient beds (2 of which are High Dependency) specialising in Ear, Nose and Throat, Ophthalmology, Plastics, Dental and Maxillofacial, Craniofacial, Audiology and Cleft. The roles require a flexible, organised, and forward-thinking nurse with the leadership skills and expert knowledge to support the patients and their families both on the ward and at discharge.


Main duties of the job

As a member of the Nurse Specialist team, you will be responsible for the delivery of high quality care to a defined caseload of children and families incorporating a care co-ordination remit as agreed.  

 To provide effective nursing leadership, expertise, advice and support to a team / department and ensure the provision of high-quality care to children and families . 

 Act as a role model and highly competent practitioner and foster an environment that enhances the patients, family and staff experience.  

 Act as a designated resource to children and families, and other shared care professionals.  

 Promote an innovative and progressive attitude to the continual improvement of patient care through research and evidence-based practice.

* Sufficient experience at band 6 level or equivalent within relevant clinical environment
* Expert knowledge relevant to the speciality/field or practice

* Experience of handling clinical incidents and complaints
* Experience in Safeguarding Procedures


Desirable criteria

* Previous experience of change management and problem solving
* Previous experience of research and audit

* Excellent managerial, leadership and organisational skills
* Excellent verbal, written communication and listening skills
* Self-discipline and good time management to support periods of lone working
* Ability to work as an integral part of the multidisciplinary team
