Responsibilities
* Lead and coordinate a team of rail engineers and oversee business operations related to transport projects.
* Provide strategic advice and knowledge on rail engineering.
* Collaborate with design managers to find the best engineering solutions.
* Provide technical direction for track engineering teams onsite.
* Produce design briefs and work schedules.
* Identify, mentor and develop junior staff.
* Manage projects in a high‑quality, professional and commercially viable manner.
* Identify and control risks.
* Oversee bid and tender documents.
* Ensure work meets health, safety and environmental standards.
* Liaise with key stakeholders and produce reports for senior managers.
* Ensure rail engineering projects comply with legislation and industry standards.
* Collaborate with other contractors and specialists.
Qualifications
* NVQ Level 3 Rail Engineering or equivalent apprenticeship.
* SVQ at SCQF Level 6 in Rail Engineering.
* SCQF Level 5 Rail Engineering apprenticeship.
* Undergraduate or postgraduate degree in civil engineering, specializing in rail engineering.
* Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card (required for on‑site construction work).
* Minimum 5 GCSEs at grades 9‑4 (A*‑C), including English and maths.

Salary
Newly trained rail engineering managers start at £28,000 per year. With experience, the salary can rise to £73,000.
