We’re looking to fulfil this exciting role to lead our medical department. The role will provide clear leadership and direction to our medical team in order to provide players with the best support for injury and illness as well as ensuring the squad is prepared for competition in the
United Rugby Championship.
We are a professional rugby club that operates from the famous rugby ground Rodney Parade, Newport, South Wales. Our training facilities are based in the heart of our community and we compete in the United Rugby Championship, a multi-nation competition that pits the best Welsh, Scottish, Irish, Italian and South African talent against each other.
The Role
RESPONSIBILITIES
As Head of Medical Services you will act as clinical governance lead and manage the medical department as part of a multidisciplinary
team. You will lead the injury prevention and rehabilitation process by setting consistently high standards of medical care and player welfare as you deliver comprehensive physiotherapy support and elite-level clinical management to first-team players.

YOU SHOULD HAVE:
• BSc (Hons) degree in physiotherapy, ideally a post graduate qualification.
• Must be HCPC and CSP registered.
• Evidence of up to date training in the immediate management of injuries (WRU ICIR or RFU PHICIS
Level 3)
• Minimum 5 years of experience working in elite sport.
• Experience in a leadership or managerial role.
• Full UK driving licence and access to own car.
• Ability to work unsociable hours, including evenings and weekends.
• Eligible to work in the UK.
LOCATION & HOURS OF WORK
Our training base is at the CCBC Centre for Sporting Excellence, Ystrad Mynach in South Wales. Here we have access to all-weather training facilities, a high performance gym, recovery and medical facilities.
The role is based on an average 40 hours per week; however this will be flexible due to the nature and demands of the role. The nature of the role will on occasions require working in excess of these hours to ensue core objectives are achieved, including evening and weekends. International travel with the team to away games and camps is an exciting benefit.
Key Responsibilities, Tasks and Activities
Clinical
• Ensure all aspects of player care are monitored including prehab, rehab, fitness assessments and treatment
• Act independently to assess, analyse and provide a clinical diagnosis for all injured players to determine their need for physiotherapy intervention.
• Act independently to plan, implement, evaluate, treat and progress player care to maximise rehabilitation potential
• Manage caseload of players effectively and efficiently
• Produce daily and weekly reports of player injury status
• Maintain patient documentation, records and accurate statistical information to reflect care provided and meet professional standards
• Enter all clinical data in the WRU electronic medical note keeping system
• Communicate and make recommendations to all relevant disciplines of staff to maximise player care and promote multidisciplinary working
• Develop, implement and maintain appropriate clinical guidelines ensuring clinical effectiveness to optimise player care
• Organise and assist in the preseason-screening programme
• Provide pre-game and pitch-side medical support services at all home and away fixtures
• Be prepared to deliver and undergo a 6 monthly appraisal and development assessment process.
Managerial
• Service management, planning and development within a multidisciplinary framework
• Participate in the departmental personal development and performance review system to promote personal and service developments
• Manage, support and mentor Doctors, Assistant physiotherapists and Therapists to develop medical services to maximise player care and efficient use of resources.
• Monitor activity and support the Head Coach to prioritise resources to meet service demands without compromising patient care
• Be actively involved in clinical audit to support the clubs clinical governance strategy.
• Assist in development of, and implement, managerial policies to promote a fair, consistent and safe working environment
• Liaise with a range of individuals, internal and external to the organisation, to ensure effective service delivery
• Comply with health, safety and other regulations
• Ensure WRU minimum medical standards criteria are met for annual compliance evaluation
Education
• Develop and update clinical knowledge and skills to ensure delivery of evidence-based care.
• Provide training and learning opportunities to all medical staff
• Support medical department in-service to promote personal development
• Supervise the clinical training of undergraduate and postgraduate therapy students as required
• Be responsible for appraisal of all line managed staff
Relationship
• To communicate with Welsh Rugby Union medical staff regarding the injury status of international players
• To communicate and develop an effective relationship with strength and conditioning department
• To communicate with the Head Coach and assistants with regards to injury and fitness status of all players on a regular basis
• To communicate and develop an effective relationship with the Sports Physician/Club Doctor to ensure the highest level of care is delivered to the playing squad
• To communicate and develop an effective relationship with all third party medical providers to ensure the highest level of care is delivered to the playing squad
• Dependant on experience but commensurate with a senior leadership position - to be negotiated post interview.
• Permanent position with probationary period
• Up to 25 days annual leave based around playing and training schedule
Other:
• The role is responsible for a minimum of 4 direct reports
• The Head of Medical Services will work closely with the WRU on maintaining professional medical standards.
