The safety engineering team is responsible for the safety of the products and project solutions developed and deployed by the business line and compliance to safety principles, industry specific standards and best practices for the development of safety-critical systems.
The Safety Engineer provides technical safety input to the project/product team and is responsible for developing and executing safety engineering activities in accordance with the company’s process, applicable industry standards, best practices and sharing expert knowledge.
Key Interactions
The job holder will work closely with all members of the Bid/Product/Project teams, especially the Engineering Delivery Manager, Project Design Authority and the Solution Architect, as well as the Safety Assurance Manager and Safety Design Authority.
Key Responsibilities
* Ensure that the safety engineering activities are executed in accordance with the company’s process, applicable industry standards and best practices
* Perform hazard identification studies (HAZID, HAZOP), hazard analyses (PHA, SHA, OSHA, FTA), safety analyses (FFMEA, FMECA, FSA) and hazard management
* Define safety requirements; analyse and evaluate design compliance with safety requirements and safety principles
* Review the adequacy and completeness of the safety evidences and produce the corresponding Safety Case artefacts for sign off by the Safety Authority.
* Provide technical safety leadership to the project team; work as part of an integrated project team, promoting the company’s safety policy, best practices and train other staff
* Assure safety of products and services throughout the lifecycle, through to service withdrawal
Essential Skills & Experience
* Experience in a technical role in complex systems development with significant experience in Safety
* Good understanding of Product Safety legislation within the UK and Europe (i.e. Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, General Product Safety Regulations 2005, CE marking requirements, etc.)
* Good working knowledge of system safety lifecycle, system requirements definition, safety design concepts (system and software), safety and risk analysis
* Demonstrable experience of best practices, safety methods and techniques (e.g. HAZID, HAZOP, PHA, SHA, OSHA, FTA, FMEA/FMECA, FSA) and hazard management
* Ability to work collaboratively in an engineering development environment, ensuring System Safety compliance is achieved throughout the project lifecycle
* Good technical writing skills, excellent communication and analytical skills; excellent command of the English language, both written and oral
* An effective team player who can interface at all levels across the organisation. Able to operate successfully in a multi-cultural environment, working effectively with teams distributed across different sites/countries.
* Strong organisational and team working skills.
* Excellent customer relationship skills.
Desirable Skills & Experience
* Experience of System Safety Engineering in the training & simulation sector is desirable however experience of Safety Engineering in other complex, safety focussed and regulated organisations such as rail, aerospace, nuclear or oil & gas is accepted
* Demonstrable experience in the application of safety standards (e.g. Def Stan 00-056, Def Stan 00-051, IEC 61508) or similar is highly desirable.
* Use of DOORS and JIRA.
