Working closely with the Knowledge and Training Lead, the Senior Training and Digital Learning Specialist is responsible for the overall design, development, delivery, and evaluation of training programmes related to digital applications. This key role ensures that all clinical and non‑clinical staff are proficient in the use of critical healthcare systems, contributing directly to the safe, efficient, and effective delivery of patient care across the Trust. The post holder will assist the Knowledge, Training and Digital Learning Lead in managing the Digital Training and Learning Team, providing leadership, direction, and oversight.
Design and develop high‑quality, comprehensive digital training programmes (e‑learning, classroom, virtual, self‑study) to ensure all staff are trained in accordance with their roles and responsibilities, and that training aligns with clinical workflows and operational needs.
Collaborate actively with clinical, operational and project management leads to develop comprehensive training and support that ensures effective user adoption and achieves strategic digital objectives.
Lead the planning and execution of digital training rollouts, clearly defining and communicating timelines, milestones, and deliverables.
Lead the training team to deliver effective, specialist, role‑specific training for all staff groups (including clinical and administrative staff).
Lead on ensuring the quality and effectiveness of training collateral, training delivery and all training related support.
Establish and manage evaluation mechanisms to assess training effectiveness, measure user proficiency, gather satisfaction data, and implement continuous programme improvements.
Oversee the management, administration and effective use of training systems, training collateral repositories and the Learning Management System (LMS).
Provide coaching, mentoring and continuous professional development guidance to the training team.
Ensure training activities maximise the Trust’s financial efficiency by minimising system errors and supporting staff competence and confidence when using Trust digital systems.
* Managing training projects: Proven ability to lead and manage the entire training life‑cycle for complex clinical applications (e.g., Cerner EPR and/or related digital systems), from initial scoping and Training Needs Analysis (TNA) through to delivery and completion. This management encompasses designing and producing high‑quality, multi‑format collateral, adhering to strict project timelines, and efficiently scheduling all training resources and activities to meet the needs of diverse clinical and operational audiences.
* Foundational Training Knowledge: Excellent subject matter knowledge of adult learning principles and instructional design. Able to demonstrate the practical application of core training methodologies and needs analysis to create effective, inclusive training for diverse audiences. Supported by professional qualifications or significant equivalent experience.
* Leading Training Teams: The ability to manage and lead training teams, with proven experience of providing strategic direction, oversight, support and motivation. This includes effective performance management and the demonstrable ability to mentor, coach and ensure the professional development and quality consistency of junior trainers.
* Training Collateral Creation: Uses advanced digital skills to personally create and manage high‑quality training collateral (e‑learning, guides, videos). Demonstrates attention to detail and an innate understanding of training quality to ensure all training assets effectively support learning outcomes and user adoption across the organization.
* Training Delivery Proficiency: Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required, utilizing active listening to clearly present and tailor complex information to all organisational levels. Possesses the proven ability to quickly assess needs and adapt engaging and effective multi‑modal training delivery and support (in‑person, virtual, coaching, floor walking, etc.) to effectively meet the specific needs of diverse clinical and operational staff within a healthcare context (e.g., NHS).
Desirable criteria
* Proficient in leveraging recognised Project Management (PM) software (e.g., MS Project/Planner, Jira) to actively support and oversee training projects and their deliverables. Demonstrates expertise in using these tools, alongside advanced Excel skills, to efficiently track progress, perform detailed analysis of training data, accurately report on project status and measure overall training effectiveness.
* Holds a professional certification in adult training or education (e.g., TAP, CIPD, CertEd, Awards in Education and Training) or equivalent experience.
* Experience facilitating practical knowledge transfer sessions, conducting structured coaching activities and performing quality assurance audits (e.g., side‑by‑side observation, feedback loops, delivery audits) for junior trainers.
* Proactive communication and exceptional stakeholder management skills. Proven ability to lead training initiatives through collaborative work with digital and clinical teams, effectively managing expectations, anticipating conflicts and securing crucial buy‑in across all organisational levels.
* Advanced digital proficiency across key healthcare platforms (EPR/Cerner, MS 365, LMS) and advanced content creation tools (e.g., e‑learning authoring, video editing) for producing high‑quality, engaging, multi‑media training content.
* Expert user of the Cerner Millennium EPR system (or equivalent), with comprehensive functional knowledge and a deep understanding of clinical, administrative and operational workflows.
* Possess a strong working knowledge of NHS operating practices, key policies and organisational procedures, including patient clinical pathways and routes to care. Understands relevant healthcare governance, statutory and regulatory frameworks (e.g., CQC, GDPR).
Desirable criteria
* A degree (or equivalent professional experience) in a field such as Computer Science, Digital Media, IT or Healthcare.
* Ideally 5+ years of demonstrable experience as a healthcare trainer within the National Health Service (NHS) or a similar complex clinical setting.
