We are LUMINA a start-up redefining the future of heavy machinery through next-generation electrification and advanced technology. Our mission is to create high-performance, safe, and efficient heavy equipment that leads the industry in capability and sustainability.
We are motivated, highly accountable, and work together to deliver at pace. We offer like minded individuals the opportunity to truly own their own area and role within the team; shaping strategy and being fully responsible for delivery.
Together we are Lumina.
Role Overview
We are seeking a skilled High Voltage (HV) Electrical Systems Engineer to take full ownership of the high-voltage architecture — from the traction battery output through to the powertrain, power distribution units, and all HV consumers. This includes the design and integration of the HV architecture, power distribution, thermal management of electrical hardware, and the development of performance and efficiency models. You will work closely with controls, systems, and mechanical teams to deliver a robust HV solution.
What You’ll Do
* High Voltage System Ownership
* Own the full high-voltage architecture from the traction battery output to the powertrain, including all HV consumers and distribution paths.
* Define and maintain HV system schematics, single-line diagrams, and wiring documentation.
* Specify components such as Power Distribution Units (PDUs), inverters, DC/DC converters, on-board chargers, and HV connectors.
2. Power Distribution & Protection
* Design and specify HV Power Distribution Units (PDUs) for safe and efficient current distribution.
* Define protection strategies, including fusing, contactors, insulation monitoring, and emergency disconnects.
* Ensure compliance with relevant high-voltage safety standards (ISO 6469, IEC 60664, or equivalent).
3. Thermal Management & Safety
* Work with thermal engineers to design cooling systems for HV components (batteries, PDUs, inverters, chargers) to ensure safe operation under all conditions.
* Define operating limits and derating strategies to ensure long-term reliability and safety.
* Creating high voltage working practices and risk assessments.Ensuring staff are trained to the correct high voltage awareness levels.
4. Simulation & Modelling
* Use tools such as MATLAB/Simulink or similar to simulate power flow, energy usage, thermal loading, and system efficiency.
* Support vehicle-level performance modelling to optimise range, efficiency, and charging times.
5. Charging System Development
* Specify and integrate high-rate DC fast charging systems (≥200kW) with appropriate cooling and safety features.
* Work with charging standards (e.g., CCS, CHAdeMO, ISO 15118) to ensure compatibility with commercial charging infrastructure.
6. Integration & Testing Support
* Collaborate with mechanical, controls, and systems teams to integrate HV components into the vehicle architecture.
* Support prototype builds, HV commissioning, and functional testing of the complete HV system.
* Troubleshoot and resolve HV system issues during development and testing phases.
7. Supplier & Manufacturing Interface
* Work with suppliers to source HV components that meet technical and cost requirements.
* Provide build support and training for safe handling and assembly of HV systems.
What You’ll Bring
* Significant experience in high-voltage electrical systems engineering, ideally in EV automotive, off-highway machinery, or rail/industrial electrification.
* Proven experience with HV architectures, PDUs, and electrical safety for systems above 400V.
* Hands-on experience with high-rate DC charging systems (>200kW).
* Experience with thermal management of electrical hardware.
Technical Skills
* Proficiency with MATLAB/Simulink or equivalent for power, energy, and efficiency modelling.
* Knowledge of electrical safety design for HV systems, including insulation, creepage/clearance, and grounding.
* Experience with HV interlock systems, insulation monitoring devices, and fault diagnostics.
* Understanding of vehicle HV standards (ISO 6469, ISO 17409, IEC 61851, etc.).
Soft Skills
* Strong ownership mindset with the ability to lead system design from concept to production.
* Excellent communication skills for cross-functional collaboration.
* Highly detail-oriented, with strong documentation and change-control discipline.
Why Join Us?
* Shape the HV architecture for a next-generation heavy electric machine.
* Collaborate with a World class engineering team solving unique challenges in machine and vehicle electrification
* Work in a fast paced, innovative start-up with full design ownership
* Fully remote working and the opportunity to make your own hours.
