Role overview
The Development Underwriter is responsible for the profitable acquisition of new business and the retention of existing accounts. The role focuses on achieving budget and Underwriting Loss Ratio (ULR) targets by upholding high underwriting standards and delivering excellent customer service. This will be achieved through both open market trading and the use of online trading platforms.
Key Accountabilities
Underwriting & Trading:
* Underwrite, trade, and negotiate new and renewal business in line with the company’s underwriting strategy and risk appetite.
* Identify and obtain all necessary risk information for accurate underwriting and pricing.
Business Growth & Broker Relations:
* Proactively develop new business opportunities with a specific panel of brokers by providing a dedicated underwriting resource.
* Identify and triage new business enquiries that align with the company's appetite.
* Collaborate with the Business Development team to support growth objectives and achieve budget targets.
Compliance & Governance:
* Adhere to personal underwriting authority limits, ensuring all activities comply with company service standards and regulatory requirements.
* Actively support the company's commitment to Consumer Duty by ensuring the delivery of good outcomes for retail customers and avoiding foreseeable harm.
Performance Tracking & Reporting:
* Devise and agree annual and monthly targets with brokers and track progress using key performance indicators (KPIs) like quote volumes and conversion rates.
* Provide regular reports on broker relationships and business performance to management.
Case Management & Ownership:
* Take ownership of and provide oversight for large cases (both new and existing), including the negotiation of terms and management of pre-cover or renewal surveys.
Problem Resolution:
* Act as a key liaison between brokers and internal teams to resolve issues or challenges on new or existing business.
* Handle and resolve queries from clients, colleagues, accounts, and claims departments in a timely manner.
Skills And Knowledge
Underwriting & Product Knowledge
* Extensive underwriting experience across core market products, ideally within areas of property insurance.
* A sound and working knowledge of market wordings, products, and Bspoke policy documentation.
* The ability to apply strong underwriting judgment and expertise in risk assessment and decision-making.
Commercial & Negotiation Skills
* Proven commercial underwriting experience or experience dealing with commercial products in a broking environment.
* Strong trading and negotiation capabilities with the ability to gain maximum benefit from these skills to achieve commercially sound outcomes.
* A high level of numeracy to effectively interpret financial and risk data.
Regulatory & Compliance
* Solid understanding of regulatory compliance requirements, including FCA rules.
* A working knowledge of the law as it relates to insurance.
Interpersonal & Communication
* Good knowledge of the broker environment and the ability to build and maintain strong broker relationships.
* Excellent written communication skills, with the ability to write in plain English and avoid unnecessary jargon.
* A strong customer focus and the ability to understand and anticipate customer needs.
Personal Attributes
* High attention to detail and the ability to work accurately and consistently.
* Proven ability to work to tight deadlines and perform effectively under pressure.
Experience and Qualifications
Essential
* Experience: A minimum of 5 years of proven experience in an underwriting role, with a strong focus on core market products and within a delegated authority environment.
* Qualifications: You must hold the CII Certificate in Insurance (Cert CII) or an equivalent professional qualification.
* Knowledge: Demonstrable knowledge of the UK's regulatory framework for insurance, including relevant FCA rules and compliance requirements.
Desirable
* Experience: Previous experience dealing with specialist property, property or commercial insurance.
* Qualifications: Progress toward the CII Diploma in Insurance (Dip CII) is preferred
